246 repair

Hi,

I haven't posted in a while, but I was wondering about a repair I am having done on my tascam 246. Everything works fine on it, except it won't play or record (somewhat crucial). Someone told me it was a belt possibly. I try not to repair these things on my own because I don't like dealing with it.

Anyway, the guy at the local repair shop said that it would be around 180 bucks to replace the belts and rubber parts that have probably gone bad over time and it would work fine. Am I getting ripped off or is this fairly typical?

Not sure if you're getting ripped off, but most of that $180 is going to be labor, as the belts are easily $20 or less.

This is something simple that you can do yourself! Believe me, I am not AT ALL "handy" or "technical" when it comes to repairs, and most of the time I leave it to the pros, but I had some bad belts on my 246 and just did this fix today and it couldn't have been easier.

A Reel Person explains it easily in this thread:

And you can buy the belts on eBay, like I did:

Good luck and hopefully it's just a belt problem! Mine was, and my recorder seems to be working just fine (it now records and plays back!).

Thanks man. Well, it's already being done, so oh well. I just get sick of fucking around with all the mechanical stuff. I don't think I'm extremely mechanically minded.

The repair guy seems trustworthy to me, so I'm not going to sweat it. Maybe next time I'll try it on my own. I'll let you know how it turns out if you care. thanks

and yeah, it is all going toward labor, which was explained to me. So I probably should do it on my own next time. Thanks for the links too.
