New here!
Sup guys. My name is Ben and I'm starting a home studio for recording bands in my area.
My brother was a soldier and he passed away, leaving behind some money I am using to pursue my dreams in his memory. Might sound stupid, but hey. Regardless, I'm trying to do all I can to be as professional as possible. I've messed with four tracks and such since I was kid, but now that I've gotten serious about all of it and I have some questions I hope you guys will be able to answer. And maybe down the road I could answer some questions too. Enough introduction, on to my first question! I am getting the 003 Rack+. Ideal for recording drums and such, but what about bands that prefer to "do it all live"? With 8 tracks, I can only imagine using 4 for the drums (snare, kick, two overheads) then guitar, bass, and one more free track (for another guitar or whatever it may be - or even a vocal, if the band didn't care much about how they sounded) But for the drums, I'd still like to have more mic's then just 4...so what can I do? I've read some stuff about using gear to get more inputs, but what is the deal with that? you'd lose the ability to have the individual tracks to play with, right? I mean, if I could submix the toms into two channels that might be cool but I could see some problems arising there. I've rambled here, but what do you guys think? How do I get the most out of the 003 Rack+ in a "live" session? |

Hey dude
Sorry to hear about your brother - I like many others appreciate the risk that the soldiers take so we don't have to so I have so much respect for him. Personally, with the 003 Rack + I'd get a set of standalone preamps with an ADAT converter. Depending on your budget, you could get a Behringer ADA8000 or a Focusrite Octopre to name but a few. You'd then hook that up via the ADAT connection giving you a total of 16 preamps going straight into Pro Tools. That will give you plenty of channels to play with :-) Will |

Thanks a lot man.
Regarding your suggestion, I've seen this solution elsewhere, but I've yet to hear about how you would control those extra inputs with Pro Tools. I havn't actually got my 003+ yet (on order from Guitar Center, maybe by Friday) - I've been using the Mbox 2. Does your solution allow me to have 16 fully controled inputs? Could I arm 16 tracks in Pro tools and each of them have a different input (1-16) allowing me the flexibility I need? If so, this is wonderful news. I guess i'm just looking for some more specifics on how to intergrate the extra 8 pres into my 003+ - regardless, I think I have some new gear to get now, lol. Thanks man! |

Basically you'll want to set the 003 to accept an external clock, thus using the extra unit as your master clock. Once you've done that, and have set the optical input to ADAT, in the I/O setup, you'll have Analogue 1-8 and ADAT 1-8. You will then be able to route each of those inputs to a different track. Allowing you to record 16 discrete channels of audio. I hope this helps dude. Will |
