Anyone got an Mbox 1 they want to sell me?

I recently got an internship at this studio and i need to get a home system to work in pro tools with. i dont have a ton of money, but if anyone has an old mbox with protools, i would be interested in taking it off your hands!! im thinkin around 150 or so.

anything would be great!

im so impatient, but i found an mbox online for 150 and since i kind of impulse bought it, and it is used but in *excellent* condition, i did not take time to really research what i just bought.

what im worried about now is, it comes with pro tools... 5.2!!! i checked all the compatibility and i am running mac os 10.4.11 and 5.2 uses 9... so i figure i can upgrade the software to 7 which works with 10.4.11. in order to upgrade, will i have to install the 5.2 then follow some upgrade link? and can i even upgrade to just 7.0? what do i do to use this stuff when it comes in the mail? or did i just make a nightmare of problems and should quit engineering and go be a bartender?

btw. im sorry for dumping my problems being so new, but i promise to be here a lot more often to try and help others when i can!
there seems to be a ton of smart people here.

well...first ting is that you want to do a clean install of PT...every time you upgrade you need to uninstall the old one first.

Second...You will have to go to digi web site and create an account...it's free, BUT I dont know if you will be able to DL the software for free....let me know how it works out!!! I might be able to help youo out!!

No you can't download the software for free.

You will need to purchase an upgrade - which would have to be to Pro Tools 8 as Pro Tools 7.4 is no longer available.

This poses problems for you as you're running OS 10.4, and Pro Tools 8 will need 10.5.

so about the 5.2

i wont have to install it at all then right? digi does still offer downloads of most pro tools versions im pretty sure. i think the 7.4 was 150, same as 8 and even includes 8 when i want to begin using it, but i wont have to update my os and the studio im at is sticking with 7.4 for a while, so that would be good i think. im just not sure thats how it works... buy an mbox, then the software separate and it will all work together?

since its used, i wont be able to register it right?

basically, instead of finding an mbox for cheap that comes with somewhat updated software, i just got myself into buying both separate and spending twice as much i guess... live and learn.

thank you guys for your help!!! im gonna post some recordings soon that i did with cubase!

No you can register it but you need to get the previous registered owner (assuming it has been registered) to fill out a transfer of ownership form. You then fax this to Digidesign. Call your local Digidesign Customer Support line and they should be able to help you out. Where abouts are you located?

No you cannot download Pro Tools 7.4 - this upgrade is no longer available and you can only purchase an upgrade to Pro Tools 8. The Pro Tools 7.4 upgrade, with free upgrade to Pro Tools 8 was only available until the release of Pro Tools 8.

The whole mantra of Digidesign is that you buy the hardware and they give you the software for free.

Sadly the only proper way to do this is to upgrade to Leopard and buy then download Pro Tools 8.

Alternatively, sell on your Mbox, and find another one that comes with Pro Tools 7.x - so that you can use it on Tiger.

lawrence, ks

yes you are right. only pt 8.0 i guess i just didn't think i would have to buy software and pay 130 to update my mac. what a headache.. in order to get this working, i will have spent 430.00 when i should have just found an mbox 2 or something that comes with 7.4.

i will probably just try to get rid of the mbox when i get it or maybe i can still cancel if it hasnt shipped yet.

back to square one. anyone got an mbox or anything that comes with pro tools 7.4?

thanks pezking for the info! very helpful!

The "code" is a registration code. If you find one on the internet and use it, you are effectively pirating the software.

You must buy the upgrade from Digidesign.

By all means it's a very reasonable price...

Where's the incentive to buy the product then?

You shouldn't really encourage pirating software on this forum. It's really frowned upon.

Is pirating old software thats no longer sold frowned upon?

I must admit having to upgrade to PT 8 would bother me if I wanted to use an older version.

I'm sure the thousands of legitimate Pro Tools 7.4 users who haven't upgraded to 8.0 would be pretty angered to find out that people are getting the software (which they paid money for) for free.

7.4 and indeed 7.3 are still in wide use, both in the professional and consumer segments. If Digidesign gave away earlier versions free of charge, or if people pirate the software there's no incentive to buy the software.

The upgrade price is by all means VERY reasonable especially when compared to other DAWs. If Digidesign don't receive revenue from these sales because people are pirating, it limits the amount of resources that can be put into development. This goes the same for pretty much any developer.

Pirating software amounts to theft. Would you steal somebody elses songs, compositions, ideas or indeed products from a shop? No? Then don't pirate software.

If you really don't want to pay for a DAW then use Audacity or Reaper or one of the many other free DAWs.

I buy my software, but don't have strong negative feelings toward those around me using pirated software. I don't know why, I just don't really care. It bothers me far more if people are selling pirated software, or running a business on it.

There's a giant thread going round in circles about this

http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=56631

I participated in it for a bit, but it got very tiresome. 1700 posts and they didn't reach enlightenment - I don't think we will either.
