How Do I Record

Hello, I know NOTHING about recording off a digital piano. I've talked to the folks at Guitar Center and purchased a book Home Recording for Dummies, but that's just TOO much information and I don't understand the technical talk.

I want to know the basics. I'm purchasing the Yamaha s90 es and would love to know what Patch means; what Sequencing means; what Mixer means. what's a smart card, etc I know what midi means, I know USB and almost all the computer technical stuff, but I'd like to know this stuff in lehman's terms.

Can someone please tell me how to record using my S90 ES with or without a computer. I just need to know if and how I can do record, before I take the plunge of purchasing the s90 and avoiding 2 years of recording school.

Any help is appreciated.

Search "pc home recording" on Google and go to "Home Recording on a PC" from Guitar Noise's site. Second or so result.

Following all that, except for the part about connecting your guitar (here you will simply plug your USB keyboard into the computer before opening any recording program. upon opening your program, your keyboard should be recognized and synched with that program.)

Follow your recording program's included tutorial(s) or figure out in a few minutes on your own how to press record and such.

If you cant deal with that, consider teaming up with someone who IS technically capable and can push the buttons for you....

Whoa, let's give the guy a break, eh? I know exactly where the guy is coming from, because I'm just as clueless as he is. I've never seen one of these recording programs, never hooked a keyboard up to my computer, and I surely don't know what most of these terms mean. In fact, this guy probably knows more than I do when it comes to home recording, and he obviously knows close to nothing.

Let's help this guy out, because maybe there are others who would be interested in learning how to do this stuff. Even though the book is called, "Home Recording For Dummies," there are still a lot of technical terms or aspects that may not be understood by the reader.

I've been here for a matter of a few days and have probably asked some pretty "rookie" questions, but nobody's bashed on me for it. I've gotten great advice and suggestions from everyone that's posted. How'bout if we offer this guy the same courtesy...

you know nothing about recording. Reading home recording for dummies is to much information, but you want to blow 2 grand on a digital piano. Ohh guitar center must really really love you. You could buy a small useable studio setup for that. If you already have a computer you can get a few mics, preamps, a audio interface midi controller software etc.


or in layman terms the box "computor" the analog capturificator "microphone" the mic volume boostificator "preamp" the piano simulator "midi keyboard controller" the audio interface "where you plug everything in to get into the box so you can start to recordify" the software "what is used to mixificate the individual recordifications for the enjoability of every individual in the usa an other supporters of this fine country

No more jokes. What you need to buy is:


A computer (if you dont own one) with relevant software
An audio interface
Some cables

The best way to learn about recording is to experiment and break stuff. If you dont know what gain is, you will soon find out when you turn it to +30 and blow your ears off.

Seriously, you can read all the books you want. Just play. Too many beginners try to research this stuff. Use your ears. Buy some cheap kit. Plug it together. Rock.

Listen very carefully...

If you are serious about laying down some tracks buy the Key Rig or something. Learn it. It takes time, frustration, and agony. This "hobby" will drive you insane and ultimately will result in bitter thread responses to newbies that dare wade in the waters of the "recording forums!"

Gotta agree with these guys that are posting useful advice.

Think of recording this way. It's like a sport. You can't just suit up and go play football or basketball. First you need to learn the fundamentals.

I don't mean to get off topic here, but I wanted to be the Heavy Metal star 20 years ago when I picked up a guitar. I just wanted to go out there and solo, and play some power chords, and pick up chicks. While I played off/on for about 10 years, I probably had the ability of someone who was playing for 6 months. Why? Because I didn't want to learn the fundamentals. I didn't want to learn how to read music or learn scales. All I wanted to do was go out there and shred, and hope that I sounded like Yngwie.

Well, it's been 10 years since I last picked up a guitar until right before Xmas. I've started over, pulled out my books, and got down to it. Now, I have to forget the little that I knew (which will be VERY easy) and start over from scratch, and learn the fundamentals before my playing will improve.

Do yourself a favor, dude. Buy yourself some cheap equipment and mess around with it. You don't need some expensive setup as a beginner.
