mixing and sound quality

I have a recording by the band i was in some years ago which was mixed and put on tape. the quality is not very good. I would like to record it to CD and try to improve the quality.

Can I extract individual tracks e.g. drums, bass etc and re-mix them or am I just asking for the impossible.

I have tried a recording and altered e.q. settings which improved the sound slightly.
The sound volume also varies.

I would be grateful for any guidance on this subject
