Looking to buy a midi keyboard...

Had a look at these two but I'm just wondering about the price. Will I really need one which costs say 400 quid if a 50 - 100 pound one will do the same job?

I don't need any additional effects/sounds from the keyboards, I have PLENTY of vst instruments and samplers which are being neglected.

It really depends on your budget and what you're looking for. Obviously if you spend some more money you can get something of better quality with a better feel. And even some sounds if you're interested in going the synth route. I bought a (relatively) cheap Edirol PCR M50 first time around and was rewarded with a bunch of dead keys a little over a year later. This was fixed with new contacts, but keep in mind that generally, cheaper units won't last as long and will spend more time broken than something more reliable.

If you want a professional look, then definately go for one of those, but you know some of those keyboards at walmart they have on display sometimes? Alot of them support midi. I used to take piano lessons when I was in elementary school, and dad bought me a casio. You know.. the ones with those crappy speakers and those pre sequenced songs. I'm 21 now. Mine's lasted me this far. I've even had dumbells dropped on it and broke half the key off, but still everything works. Have it plugged up to my laptop. It does everything I need it to do.

Behringer is pretty new to the controller biz. I don't know if they're manufacturing them in house or farming them out. I've never used an M-Audio controller but I have used one of their interfaces for years without a problem.

I use a StudioLogic SL-161 by Fatar which has a good rep for quality keyboards. They don't make the 161 any more but Fatar would be a good choice. I also heard a lot of good things about the CME controllers. They're very well built.

I'd be looking for a controller with velocity sensitive keys and also aftertouch. Good luck in your search.

My two cents worth,...having played piano for years, it took me while to get used to (still getting used to) non weighted keys. Might "weigh" on your decision but usually these will cost a bit more.

Just to be clear, do you have a midi interface for your computer or are you planning on hooking up your keyboard via USB? Your answer will obviously make a difference in what you purchase.
