New to recording, need some gear.

Hello guys, i have been producing as a hobby and would want to make it my career in the future. My family is all about music and my dad decided recently that he will want me to start recording him when he sings or plays his sax. He said he would buy me some gear so i could start out. I have decided on buying the presonus firebox. Good choice? Also i plan on gettin 2 condensor mics. I need some help here, im not sure what i should be getting. Ill be recording pretty much everything, live and at home. Should i be getting a pair? or 2 different mics. And would i need a preamp? i have read that the firebox comes with 2 preamps. anyways hope someone can help me

First off, immediately get a good beginner recording book (spend $20 before spending hundred$/thousand$) that shows you what you need to get started and how to hook everything up in your studio:

Barnes&Noble or Borders are great places to start --- they have recording books and you can go get a snack or coffee and read them for FREE! Don't pass by a good recording book --- this is a VERY technical hobby and you REALLY want to start a reference library!!!

Still using a built-in soundcard?? Unfortunately, those are made with less than $1 worth of chips for beeps, boops and light gaming (not to mention cheapness for the manufacturer) not quality music production.
#1 Rule of Recording: You MUST replace the built-in soundcard.

And you can go out to any Barnes&Noble or Borders and pick up "Computer Music" magazine - they have a full FREE studio suite in every issue's DVD, including sequencers, plugins and tons of audio samples. (November 2006 they gave away a full copy of SamplitudeV8SE worth $150, November 2007-on the racks Dec in the US- they gave away SamplitudeV9SE. It pays to watch 'em for giveaways...)

The FireBox has 2 built-in preamps and the ability to handle 2 more channles if you have other preamps handy. It seems to be a good choice for that price point. You might also consider the Echo AudioFire 4.

You don't necessarily have to get matched pairs of condenser mics, but a lot of people like to have matched pairs for drum overheads, stereo room recording, etc. Read up on stereo mic configurations (XY, Blumein pair, Glyns Johns, "Recorderman")

For a sax you might consider a dynamic mic like a Shure SM57 if he's really going to be wailing on it. You will also definitely use it on other things like guitar cabinets and snare drums.
