Mixer Subs

Looking at mixers I noticed that the (please excuse my poor recording vocabulary) buttons that assign each channel to a certain bus usually say something like "1-2 and 3-4" instead of "1, 2, 3, 4." Does this mean it sends the channel to both buses or can you use the channels pan control to send the channel to one specific bus? This is probably a dumb sounding question to all you people who know mixers, but I'm just trying to get as much knowledge as possible before I purchase anything.

Yup, pressing the '1-2' assign button will send the signal to BOTH 1 & 2, you then use the pan knob to assign it to EITHER 1 or 2.
