Tape for Fostex A8 LR reel to reel recorder

Hi everyone. I just got one of these recorders and have been told it is tensioned to accept Quantegy 457 (1 mm base) tape and that using 456 will damage the heads. I found an equivalent to 457 and am buying it today. My question is will using 456 (or any other 2 mm base tape) do immediate damage to the heads? I'd like to use the recorder until the other tape gets here but certainly don't want to be reckless. Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Thx. Shawn

It's more a matter that it will wear the heads more quickly than a matter of it causing immediate, irreparable damage. Even whether it will do that much is a matter of controversy.

Thx JP...

I think I'll go with using the roll of 2mm tape I have until the other thinner tape arrives (as per your info.) I truly appreciate your input. As I get acquainted with this recorder I may ask another question or two of you. Thanks again. Shawn

456 is 1.5, not 2.0.
