I'm using an HP CD burner, and the software's Adaptec EZ CD Creator.

When I try to burn stuff to a CDR now, I get this Easy CD Creator error message: "This application is unable to use your CD writer as it is currently being used by Adaptec Direct CD." Huh? What's all that about? So I restart the computer, and get the same thing. So I uninstalled all the software, reinstalled it, and I *still* get the error message.

Anybody shed any light on this? Or is it time for the dreaded Windows reinstall again?

Which o/s, and which version of EZ CD Creator? I found that my old version of EZ CD Creator wouldn't work with Windoze ME (horrid garbage crap from the Great Satan of Redmond!). I had to get the latest & greatest from

http://www.adaptec.com/go/roxio/roxi...ByProduct.html

- cost me about $100 but the s/w is pretty good, and has many other built-in features which were missing from the "lite" version I'd used until now.

Good Luck!

- Wil

dobro-

I have the HP 9100i. I disabled (or did I just delete it?) the Adaptec DirectCD that came with the burner cause I didnt like it. It got automatically installed when I installed the burner, I didn't like that. I think the 2 programs are just conflicting with one another.

H2H - I would love to *not* have Direct CD on my system. How do you *not* install it? Or do you have to uninstall it once you've installed EZ Creator?

Wil - I'm using Win98, and the CD burner and software has worked okay up till now. Something's out of line suddenly.

I reccomend

I have the same basic setup, and I too got rid of that annoying Direct Cd thing. I reccomend downloading a program called RegCleaner. You can get it at http://www.tweakfiles.com/registry/regcleaner.html

It safely lets you remove all the start up stuff you don't need/want. It also has other features like "clean" registry keys, and uninstall software. I run it every so often to clean up the mess I make with shareware etc.

For those of you who aren't aware of the garbage that gets loaded at startup, hit ctl-alt-delete. All that stuff is eating up your memory. 90% of it is useless crap. Plus, the more programs loaded into memory, the closer you are to a leak that bringeth ye "blue screen of death".

It will install that automatically with the HP install. You can go back and uninstall it and that works, at least for me in win2k.

Okay, here's the mystery revealed. A Hewlett-Packard techie helped me. She said that if you format a CD in Direct CD, it can't be read by Easy CD Creator, and that's why I was getting the error message! Can you believe it? The same software issued by the same company has this mutual incompatibility issue! I'm disgusted with the software, but happy to find the answer.

Dobro,

Do a search on " EZ CD creator" in this forum. There was some real good info on the inherent bugs a few months back. Maybe late Dec., early Jan.
