What are some good mic and pre combos?

I'm looking to buy another mic for my LA610. I heard that some mics are better than others on certain pres. For example, I've read that U87s sounds better on Avalon 737 than on LA610.

What's a good mic to pair up with the LA610? My price budget is under $1K.

Thanks

I dont know about the rest of you but i think the LA is a not very transparent pre like the Avalon, so if you want to capture the pre-amp sound, ill go with an AT4040 or something like that...

Are solid states better at making preamps more transparent? What's another good one?

A solid state pre-amp is not necessary transparent, for example, the avalon is a tube pre-amp and its very transparent, neve is solid state and its not transparent.. It depends on the components used but also in the design of the pre-amp...
