DP02CF Playback problem

I purchased one of the Portastuds back in May and am just now finding the time to start messing with it. Yeah, I know stupid as the 45 day return has run out...anyway. I have followed instruction as per manual. Formated the card, pluged a variax guitar in to the 1/4" input, fliped the switch next to the input to guitar, armed the track, set the input level, pressed play and recorded some doodling. I show the levels working on the A band, and the dual levels on the far right for the mix. No level shows on the actual track I am recording on. When I rewind and play I get nothing...I am afraid that perhaps this thing is broken or am I just doing something wrong. I checked the troubleshoot in the manual...and I am doing all of that. Anybody got any ideas??

Press and hold the A-Input button and press a track number (rec-funct) button to assign the input-to-track.

Thanks you have solved the problem...I don't recall seeing that anywhere in the manual and yet I must have done it by accident to have managed to record a track when I 1st purchased this. Now if you could give me an answer to my finding the time to actually record some tracks....Thank you again for your help.
