Opinions needed! Joe Meek 3Q or Rane MS-1b ???

I have the Rane right now and it's good, however I'm being offerred a Joe Meek 3Q for about what I spent on the Rane and i'm wondering which has the best preamp? Has anyone A/B 'd the two units? i have other compression and eq, so it's really about the preamp.

Help !!!!!

Thanks,

Stuart

Apples and oranges. The Rane MS-1b is absolutely fantastic for the money, but the JM pre has a whole different character.

Don't know about the 3Q, but I have a 6Q and its a good pre, but it has some color. Good color. The Rane is suppose to be neutral and clean I believe.

I have a 3Q and it is very colored in my opinion.

It is OK for a different sound, but I certainly would not depend on it for my main pre.
I'd stick with the Rane personally.

Thanks, guys. I think I'll stick with what i have for now. I got a great acoustic guitar sound last night using the Rane, a TC300 and an Aphex 109 eq. I love odd machines and odd flavors and since I'm recording a 60's flavored RnB album right now, I'm looking for furry warmt with definition. Thinking of getting an old 60's tube stereo and using that to add some vintage tone - any suggestions?

For round the price of the 3Q you could look at the Electro Harmonix 12AY7. This is a true tube circuit preamp and has had very favorable write ups around the net!

If you click on - effects - other , you'll see it.
