Is this OK?
I usually turn my gears and equipment on every morning and leave them on throughout the day. I'll use it for a couple hours and stop using it for a few hours because I have to get other things done outside of home such as work and family stuffs. I don't turn them off until maybe 1 or 2 and sometimes 3AM in the morning. Then I'll do the same thing the next day.
Is it okay to leave it on even though I'm not using it, and just use it for a short period? A friend told me that it's not a good idea to turn the computer on and off too many times because it makes it work twice as hard. Any ideas? ![]() |

My computer is on a good portion of the time, but I usually turn the rest of my gear on only when I need to use it. I'm not entirely sure how safe it is overall, leaving things on, but I don't want to chance it.

A lot of manufacturers recommend never turning it off.

Wow! Really? Are you talking about the computer only or the entire studio? My electricity bills will be over my head. ???

I'm not saying you actually should leave it all on -- But you should certainly be able to without hurting the gear. Assuming it's reasonably well ventilated...

How do get a reasonable ventilation?

Alot of manufacturers want to sell you a new one. Hell, if I were selling electronics, I would say the same thing.

from a tech perspective the thing thats hardest on equip in general is the heating up and cooling down... so unless we're talking about a class A tube amp which uses as much at idle as full tilt... then leaving on does make some sense... most electronics at idle use VERY little current and you computer goes into sleep mode... and ventilation at this time isnt an issue as it's not really working...

there's studios all over the world who keep the power on 24 hrs. day, 365 days/yr., and never have problems due to gear being on all the time
i think your stuff will be alright ![]() |
