Joe Walsh - Endorsement Whore

Look, I know that endorsements are part of the brass ring for a successful musician. And I have always like Joe Walsh's guitar work.

A couple of weeks ago I got a Carvin flyer, and inside there was Joe Walsh extolling the virtues of the Carvin CT6, which I am sure is a fine instrument.

Then earlier this week I received a Guitar Center flyer - the one with the foldout promoting the new Gibson Les Paul Standard. And there's Joe Walsh again, extolling the virtues of Les Pauls in general. He was quoted as saying - and I paraphrase - "In rock and roll there are only two guitars." Presumably one is the Les Paul, since he's holding one. I'm thinking that the Carvin CT6 wasn't the other one.

It just seems a bit too much like whoring when the endorsements trip over each other.

Y'know, I've seen both of them, but never put 'em together like you did. You're observation's spot on: "it's a bit too much like whoring when the endorsements trip over each other."

Most of the live pics I've seen lately have him playing Carvins. Furthermore, I'm almost certain he plays through either Carvin Nomad or Belair amps. I can't fault him for either. Carvin doesn't produce much junk.

I figure his endorsement contract with Carvin must have either been short or loose.

Think about it --he's pretty much a washed up old dude now... and last time I saw him live, he was CLEARLY suffering the effects of a LOT of drugs from back in his heyday. I'd be willing to bet the money's running out...

I don't know. The Eagles are touring again and that probably generates a lot of $$$ - especially since he's now the main guitarist with Felder out.

Seems like a victimless crime. Unless maybe his kids (grandkids?) are getting picked on in school about it.

Yeah and they had a pretty sweet revenue deal with "The Long Road Out of Eden" the new double CD. They sold quite a few (one to me--I really like it).

And y'all wouldn't endorse more than one axe yourself, if asked to sign a contract and get paid for it?

I'd endorse a pick if I could get paid for it.

If most people on this forum were getting paid per endorsement, we'd all be rich! You can bet your sweet, playable, fat-toned Gretsch G5135 Electromatic Corvette Electric Guitar with Dual Mega'Tron pickups, Anchored Adjusto-matic bridge, and Bigsby B50 vibrato tailpiece on THAT!

No one tops Richie Sambora.

He had a signature Taylor, Martin, Ovation, Fender Strat, Kramer, ESP, and thats just what I can think of at the moment.

My thoughts exactly. If some celebrity does a Ford commercial and then later does a Chevy commercial I don't think he's a hypocrite. Hell, maybe he's got one of each.

Endorsements are a source of income for these folks; who are we to say that since they endorse Product A then they cannot endorse Product B? If given the opportunity, I would endorse Fender guitars, Gibson guitars, Alembic basses, Ernie Ball Music Man basses, and Yamaha basses with my head held high; I own one or more of each of them and honestly think they are great instruments.

We are each and every one of us (unless you live in the wild and live off the land) a whore to something. If you have to be a whore, be a well paid one.
