Recommendations for free drum machine vsts?

I've tried Cubase LE's LM7, but it doesn't have a lot of variation of the kinds of sounds you can make. The main ones I've heard of are Drumatic and Loopazoid.

Also, do I need a MIDI controller that has drum pads like the M-Audio Axiom? Man, I wish I'd kept my 61-key Axiom instead of selling it and getting a Micron. Not enough controls.... Will it be a pain trying to program drum beats without the pads?

Not exactly a VST, but you can pick up Hydrogen for free. I like it, it's easy enough to use and you can either export a stereo .wav of the kit using some of the built in kits (or add on a few, I like the Yamaha vintage) or export as MIDI.

It's great for demos or futzing around with ideas. I've never taken enough time to REALLY tweak it out to get it sounding killer, however I'm sure if you were to play with it, maybe export the tracks individually to have better control over them, you'd be able to use it in a lot of places.

The only drum VST I've ever used is Groove Agent. A great program but ya gotta have Nuendo to run it I think.
