Adding virtual instruments to Cubase LE

I am a newbe to this home recording and have just dipped my toe in the water by installing Cubase LE. I have an Ensoniq SQ1 hooked up via a cheep midilink cable. I am having various dificulties.

Firstly
Although I can record midi from my keyboard, I cannot get the midi output to go back to it. I strongly suspect that this is a driver issue.

Secondly (and perhaps a more pressing issue)
I can get my recorded midi to output to the virtual instruments perfectly fine, but I'm not exactly happy with the sound of them. (String ensembles are acceptable, but pianos and guitar sounds are rather cheap sounding)

So my main question is. Can I get additional Virtual instruments to "plug into" my CubaseLE installation?

You have to enable the midi thru option in Cubase and turn your keyboard to 'local off' and yes you can use other plugins but having the instrument set with 'local on' is probably what makes it sound thin because it's receiving the instructions twice, once directly in the instrument and once via midi.
