Tascam 788 Opinions?

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to get some thoughts and opinions on the Tascam 788 Portastudio. (Digital 8-track Hard Disk recorder)

Has anyone here used one? Is it worth the price tag (roughly $900).

Has anyone used the MIDI control features?

Is the sound quality decent on it? (not looking for really pro stuff, just demos and home recording)

What are some competing products?

I'm currently using a 424 mkII and the 4 track is great but I really have no room to work, and cassette is just really clumsy for me. I figure it's time to move up in track count, and might as well jump into digital.
