I've gotten both! Including a JLCooper PPS-2 Synchronizer that came with my 388. I'd love to have 16 tracks to fool around with, then get my midi gear goin with the 688 on top of that. Is this possible?

Yes, but not with the PPS-2. You'll need something like the Tascam MTS-1000 to sync two tape machines, but you'll only have 14 tracks for audio. One track on each machine is used for a sync stripe.
