DP=02...mic?

Did a quickie first recording last week...1st track was instrumental straight from keyboard. 2nd track was a vocal from a Shure SM-58. Even with the Phantom power on and every knob and dial turned to almost 11, (lol) I had a hard time getting the vocal the show up on the meter and had to bring down the instrumental part so the vocal could come through....

My question is...if I bought a mic with Phantom power, do you think that would help any future vocals I might want to put down or should I chance running through my keyboard amp and out back into the DP-02 ?

And...if you recommend a Phantom powered mic...what's one that won't bust the bank?

Thanks for the feedback

Joe

Joe,
I can't really help out with why you've got low signal when recording, but I do know that the Shure SM-58 is what is called a dynamic microphone and does not need Phantom power to operate. Phantom power is usually used on condensor types of microphones that have electronics built in to them that do require power to make them work. The Phantom power is coming from your CF-02 and is probably around 48vdc.

I would think that the CF-02 would have enough gain for you to use the SM-58, but it's possible you may need a small mic preamp to boost the signal up a bit. If you post a question in the "Microphones" section about this mic and ask about other budget vocal mics, you'll likely get steered in the right direction.

I have a dp01 fxcd and use a variety of mics with it.....since the 01 and the 02 probably have the same preamps, I can tell you that you will do much better by buying an external preamp.....I use a couple of Behringer mic-200's....this gives a good strong signal without the need to turn those Tascam input volumes up into their "noisy" range.....turning on the phantom power will have no effect on your sm-58, but will come in handy with condenser mics......condenser mics often have higher output than dynamics, but a preamp will still be a very good idea.
