Okay this may be a very broad question but i think there is about 1000 different setups I could use with the gear I have and I am trying to figure out what would be the "Best" most efficient setup for my gear.

Gear list (not complete list)
MX9000 Mixing Desk (I know I know but it was a remnant of an old band that broke up and I got it for very very cheap)

3 M-Audio Delta 1010 units

Stienberg Houston Control Surface

Behringer 8 Channel Headphone Amp

Cubase SX


Thats the basic list and should be enough for the scope of my question.

My Goals are to be able to get many audio tracks into the "box" simultaneously and to have a versatile setup that will allow me to easily use outboard effects gear or modules where nescesary and finally to have full control over multiple monitors and multiple headphone mixes.

Currently I use the 24 direct outs on the MX9000 to feed the 24 inputs of my M-Audio Cards and can bring everything into Cubase with no problem. I bring a stereo pair back to the board and use it to monitor the "Master" output in cubase. This in most cases causes the need to set basic mixes in cubase for each performer before they record. And because of the setup I am currently using offers little to no flexibility when recording more than one person who wants to hear different things in thier headphone mix.

My question is how do other studios deal with this? What would you reccomend? (other than get rid of the Behringer)

a nice patch bay seems to be in order here... it would allow you to as needed swap the delta io's from the 9000 to fx with little head ache...

I guess my question is with all this gear what should go where.

I have all my mic and line inputs going to the behringer then I use the direct outs on each chanel to go to the maudio deltas. Im not too sure how I want to route the outputs from the maudio cards. I was thinking of using the patch bay to easily insert effects on the board.

I am still not 100% sure how to use outboard effects within cubase. And I am looking for input as far as getting seperate monitor mixes and being able to utilize the recorded tracks and the instruments being recorded in the monitoring signals.

I am not worried about using the mx9000 to mixdown. I like doing that in the box in conjunction with the Houston.

Not sure if I am making much sense. I have all this stuff configured in prly the most basic of ways but i know that my setup could be much more effective and efficient.

Yes the board does have Tape Input and Output.

If you want to have separate submixes of the tracks already recorded then you need to run more outs from your computer into the mixer and assign whatever you want to those outputs in Cubase.

Then setup your Aux channels to feed the headphone amp inputs and whatever you want on that headphone channel will be sent from that Aux.

I have all 24 channels of the board setup to feed the Deltas. . . I am not sure how I would be able to route the signals back to the board without creating a loop. . . .

I may be able to feed them back into the 25-48 inputs on the board but I will need to test this to see if those inputs are able to be routed to the aux sends.

Assign your Cubase tracks to multiple busses, where there is one master stereo buss for your master mix, and a separate buss for each cue mix that you need to set up. Assign the cue mix busses to outputs on your 1010 cards, and send those directly to the channel inputs on your headphone amp.
