Welcome to the board!

I wouldn't worry about the cable length issue--there are far more important issues w/recording. I have snakes, but only use 'em live--the studios rampant w/XLR cables--from 3' to 50'.

Books...hmmm...I never really read any, so I can't suggest any. (Wait a minute--I've read LOTS of books, just not any that pertain to home recording.) I've absorbed what I know by studying a bit of acoustics, electronics, hanging out w/other musicians in other studios--and this board. Seriously, there's a wealth of info here. I applaud your desire to read and learn more--it'll pay dividends for you.

Stay tuned, there's a couple guys who always have good recommendations, and I'm sure they'll be by. Just wanted to say Welcome!

And BTW--you posted this in the guitar forum--you'll probably get what you're looking for in the Newbies forum or maybe Recording Techniques.
