order of things! i need help.

when you have finished recording and start mixing and editing on what tracks do you often begin with?
My band consists of: Vocal, guitar, bass, organ and drums?
On what should i begin?
should i mute every other track when im editing each track?
Give me any tip/advice you got.

i usually get the drums and bass level set first. then make sure you can hear the vocals over those two. then slowly bring up everything else until you can hear it, but not so much that it overpowers the vocals.

I like to make sure that the drums can cut through more than anything, especially since they set the rhythm. After that, I bring up the other instruments while using the vocals as a reference point. I want my vocals to be quieter than my drums, but louder than my instruments.

I always start mixing as I go along after tracking each instrument. That way, when i get to the actual mixing stage, I have less to do....

In the actual mixing stage I start with the drums and the vocals first, then bring in the guitars and afterwards the bass to fill up the bottom, and then I just go from there...

oh yeah...the first few takes at very low volume, too.

I start with drums , first I get the kick sounding right, eq, gate and comp normally . Then the snare.. oh s I normally leave alone just pan wide of course . then I pan and maybe eq toms a bit. Next ill check my bass and drums together make sure theres no conficting frequencys and set the level . then guitars do the same and pan to taste . the lastly I do vocals, prob eq, compress, and delay and or reverb. Then since my monitors suck ill mix a rough mix and listen in my car and a couple other systems . then go back and ajust.
