Telecaster Appreciation Thread

Having played a Yamaha Pacifica for the last couple of months I went back to my trusty old Tele yesterday. It is the most comfortable guitar to play and sounds awesome too. They really are fantastic guitars, almost time for a new one. Post your comments in praise of Leo Fenders wonderful creation.

I can't remember who coined the phrase but the best description I've heard was

"The Telecaster, the Stradivari of rock"

I love them and I'm not generally a Fender guy. There is something solid and simplistic about the design that has the essence of excellence about it. You can't really improve on it.

Yeah I think it's just perfect. Oh Muttley, while you're here....what's the story with loose output jacks? You know, the ones whereby if you bang on the 1/4'' jack the signal wavers? I'm kinda wondering how I should go about fixing that?

I once owned a '60 Telecaster Custom. It was easily the finest electric guitar I ever had my hands on. I'll never get over the loss of that guitar. It was "The Stradivari of Telecasters".

My current "Telecaster" is a G&L ASAT Jr. Also designed by Leo.

Do you mean when the signal kicks in and out? Thats normally the hot or centre contact thats lost its "spring". If you can get at it a bit of gentle bending back will do the trick. If not it's a replacement needed. Some of them are sealed units is so swap it out. Easy to do if you can solder, almost as cheap and quick to get a tech to do it.

Some of the cheaper leads also don't seem to make a good connection because they are under size. Worth checking with a good spec lead with proper jacks on it.

Hmm well the guitar's almost four years old so I guess it's just lost some spring. I'm not sure how to get at it on a tele though - on a strat and Les Paul you can just undo the screws on the jack mount but a Tele has that weird cup mount.

You just need to pull out the control switch plate, you'll be able to get to
it then. If the guitar has ever been modded use caution the cabling could
be on the short side.

Perfect, I never even considered that. Now if only I could get the rust off that control switch.

I'm a fan, too. Teles have a unique sound and vibe that you just can't get out of other guitars. I'm particularly fond of the combined pickup sound - it can be so sweet, or it can be up in your face.

A little rust just gives it some extra character.

There are a lot places that sell the control switch plate, I think they start about
$7.50.

I bought a black mexican Tele about 4 years ago to use as an old junker. Ended up changing out the shitty pickups and replacing them with DiMarzios, got a good set up done and it sounds great. A real workhorse. Love it.

I have a Highway One Tele, which is one of my go-to guitars. It's not particularly fast, but it is forgiving. It's also my best solid body for impersonating an acoustic (think "Pinball Wizard")- Richie

Team Tele................ FUK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, I fall in and out of love/like with Les Pauls and Strats, but all of the Teles I have had have been totally stable, comfy necked tone monsters. For some reason, I dont feel like im gonna break the thing when I really want to dig hard.

As for that Tele....... I used to have a MIJ reissue like that, the rosewood was so worn down in 1st position that I ended up unloading it. Even though it had issues, It was a great guitar.
