is there a site other than wikipedia, that tells you a songs history, whos covered it etc

Start with the Harry Fox Agency. They carry the mehanical rights for about 80% of everything out there right now. They can be found here. Use their Songfile search feature. It will give you a good start for what you are interested in.

allmusic.com has info about who covered songs, but not necessarily history.
it's also good for finding out credits- like who engineered what; etc.
