help with acid pro and drum kit

Hi All,

Here is my dilemma. I have Acid Pro 6 and an Alesis DM5 electronic drum kit. I also have quite a few drum samples that I use with AP6. I have been writing drum tracks in AP6 for a while now and decided to buy the DM5 kit to make drum track writing much quicker.

What I want to do is this. I want to record the midi output of the DM5 into AP6. Then once I have a complete track, I want to be able to assign each midi track to a sample that I have. Can anyone tell me how to do this?
Have I made it clear enough? Is this possible, or did I waste my money buying the DM5?

What I'm not clear on is where your sample is playing back from. Do you mean play the DM5 drum sounds from Acid?

Normally any recorded Midi can be assigned to any Midi instrument you have whether it's hardware or software.

ok, I should have started by saying, I know nothing about midi.
I have been using Acid pro to step write my drum tracks.

I really like the samples I have put together and would like to continue to use them.

I bought the DM5 with the hope that I could somehow play my drum tracks into a program and assign each midi channel to a particular sample. This would save me hours of work and probably give me better results.

I would then like to import the individual drum tracks into Sonar once I have renderred them into wav files.

Is this something that can be done, or have I wasted my money on the DM5 and should I just continue to step edit my drum tracks?

I know what I want to do, I just don't know how to do it.

Well if you can figure out how to get this all working you haven't wasted your money. It's a very nice idea you have with using the drum kit to lay down your Midi tracks.

The problem is Acid does not provide any means for routing Midi to control samples you are using in audio tracks. For this you will need some kind of sampler plugin or a hardware sampler.
There is a nice usable sampler plugin for free here:

Of course this adds another dimension to your learning curve. But simply put the sampler allows you to assign samples to Midi note numbers and trigger them either live from your controller or from recorded Midi tracks.
In my setup I use a Korg Kontrol49 which has drum pads for my Midi controller. I then create a Midi track in Acid and set it's Midi channel to that of my hardware sampler where I have loaded a bank of drum sounds. Now I can play the drum sounds from my pads. If I hit record in Acid, it will record the Midi Data from me hitting the pads. When I am finished I can play this new Midi track and the sampler is being controlled by the Midi data I just recorded.

Working with samples in a sampler is different from just dragging wav files around in tracks. Here's some info to help you learn some proper sampling techniques.

So your missing piece of the puzzle is a sampler. Try the one I linked above it works pretty good for a freebie and I use it in Acid where it works without a hitch.

Thanks for your information. I will try that sampler and see how it goes. I'll be ecstatic if I can make this work. I'll let you know how I go.
