VS840EX to GX updating

I tried updating my 840EX to a GX using SX-31 and Midigraphy software, but nowhere does it tell me exactly what has been updated. I was hoping it would enable me to record a readable file on my Mac, rather than the proprietary format that Roland uses. I understand this is what GXs are now able to do. How can I get this feature?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
