Compression/Pre Amp Question
I'd like to use an ART PRO VLA two channel compressor in my recording. This unit is labelled as a "tube levelling amplifier". Would it be of any benefit adding a pre amp to the signal chain, or would that be redundant?
Any thoughts? Thanks |

That doesn't even make any sense... One is a preamp, one is a dynamics processor... The two have nothing to do with each other.

Sorry,
I realize pre amps and compressors serve different functions, I'm just trying to figure out if this is a combination unit, since it's labelled an amplifier, and sold as a compressor. I'm just a little confused by the labelling. Is levelling amplifier another name for compressor? |

Yes.
It was used more back in the 50s/60s but as units from that era are now revered (the LA-2A being a good example) it's become de rigeur to use that name again. If you were wanting to use it in the recording chain with a mic then the mic signal would still need to be pre-amplified before hitting the compressor (or "levelling amplifier" ).

yea i got the pro vla and the mpa gold preamp. the two work great together (especially after swapping the tubes for a mullard and a jj in the mpa and two mullards in the vla... nice entry level setup. I would even go as far as to say that it will take you right up to the point of sonic quality just below the big bucks... give it a try and tell me what you think.

The signal is getting clearer
Thank you very much, that clears things up for me. Random, I've also been looking at the MPA Gold as a pre amp. Good reviews, solid name brand, sounds like you are confirming my impression that for the money, it will be hard to beat.

Hey Random, I'm curious why you would put a different type of tube in each channel of your pre amp? Are you just aiming for variety of sounds?
