MIDI soft synth question

Hi,
I'm wondering if it's possible, and if so, how to take an existing MIDI file that is just one file but consists of several tracks with the different instruments(keys, drums, guitar, etc) and change the instruments that play. I would like to be able to use sounds from other software programs to hear the tracks instead of hearing it through the crappy default MS synth built in to my computer. I have access to many software recording programs, synths, sequencers etc, but I can't figure out how to get the tracks to play with the much higher quality sounding instruments from these other software packages. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

most daws that will import midi files will break them up by channel. You can then just copy the individual tracks to new midi tracks. You may want to have a General Midi reference handy to find out which instrument is which
