MMC to tright transport controls?

I have an Allen & Heath GS3V...it's the one with 1 million midi buttons. Says in the manualthere are dedicated function buttons for controling tape machine transport buttone via MMC. Can I use these to work the transport in Cubase SX3?

How would I go about it?

I'm really clueless about midi. I have an Emu Xmid 1x1 that I use to get my eDrums in there to trigger ezdrummer but thats about all I know how to do. I'm guessing I'll be needind a 2x2, something like a midisport.

Just wondered if it was even possible.

Yes and no. I have gotten it to work with my TM-D1000 but the problem is that MMC transport controls generally behave differently than DAW transport controls and using them to control a DAW is cumbersome at best and really annoying at the worst. IE, MMC controls are just like a tape deck so if you hit FFW, you have to hit stop to make it stop. Gets old quick.

If you want to try it, go to devices/device setup, hit the + in the left hand corner and add a generic remote. Read the help file to set it up


If you are looking for a super cheap and good remote for cubase, look for a JLcooper CS-10 that was made for an old mac with the RS422 connection only (no midi). I paid $25 for mine and it was mint in box. These are pretty useless now since no one uses RS422 anymore. New CS-10s with midi are $570 btw, so this is a good quality device. Now the neat thing is, the way that serial connection worked was that it just sent midi over RS422. What you can do, and this is how I run mine, is just to get an old Mac serial to midi adapter, which are also dirt cheap ($7 for mine) and bus powered, and just plug it into the "to host" port on the remote and viola! $570 remote for $32

There is a remote template built into cubase and it works perfectly!

you missed my point. The way that old macs worked with midi is that they would send it out via the serial port as a standard midi stream so all that you have to do to get it to work with anything midi is to put a mac to midi adapter on the end of the remote to convert it back to standard midi. It will work with anything that has midi, not just an old mac

ok, so I've managed to get the MMC buttons to work for the transport.

I even tried the ADD GENERIC REMOTE and by using the learn function in the setup panel I have the 16 faders on the GS3V moving the faders in SX3, only problem is....when I move a fader up on the board the corrisponding fader moves down in cubase and vice versa. I know there must be a simple parimeter I can change somewhere to fix this but I don't know where?

try using the learn function and move the fader from - to + (or vice versa) and see what it does

No matter where I start or stop the fader when pressing the learn key it's still working backwards. Up is down & down is up

Yes. I have a program called midi-ox that tells me the HEX, DEC and SysEx values of each move. I just don't know where to put these values in cubase

I found this on an old BB from years ago by doing a search......

You can but it isn't easy. You can get detailed documentation from A&H, I did about 5 years ago when I wrote a Mixer Map for Cubase (*this was before I saw the light*). I don't have a GS3V anymore but would be interested to see how you go, everything is SysEx so complex mixes can get VERY busy, if they had've used CC's it would've been awesome to edit automation with HyperEdit. As someone else mentioned the fader resolution is 14-bit but to overcome this there is two ways of controlling the VCA's ... there's Basic mode (which uses a single 7-bit integer where 127 = unity, and 0 = -117db attenuation). There's also an enhanced mode which uses one 7-bit integer to access the absolute position of the fader: unity->-117db, it also uses a second 7-bit integer to provide the fraction with a range of 0 -> -0.99db. The specification is quite extensive, and a creative (crazy ??) envrionment guru could build quite an amazingly comprehensive interface to the desk.

looking at those values and reading the note it is pretty clear that the way they increased the resolution is it do a quasi MSB/LSB deal with each step being addressed as a note/aftertouch value or 2 cc channels which is why cubase is having a hard time interpreting it. See if you can get it to work in basic (7 bit) mode, here is the problem:

OC and OD (data1) identify 2 separate CC's (12 & 13) incrementing at non-sequential values i.e.

12: 11, 77, 44, 39, 37, 34 etc
13: 71, 57, 44, 5, 14 etc

so what is happening here is what the blurb you posted said it would, the first bit on ch12 is decrementing normally and the second bit on ch14 is just a representation of a fraction so it can jump around (probably based on how fast you move the fader)

so what it is sending is a far cry from 0-127 like standard CC's and it is no surprise that cubase cannot interpret it correctly. In 7 bit mode you will have only 0-127 as possibilities and it should work correctly. The only work around I can think of with using the 14bit mode would be to write MAX patch to translate the 14 bit values into something more linear (not fun, HEX math makes my brain hurt).

This type of thing is exactly why did gave up on trying to use MMC controls for cubase btw.
