I can get a Royer 121. has anyone used it?
Hello from lovely Cleveland.
I love mics and I've never had a ribbon. What do you think of these? I do all kinds of music (metal to polka) in my all analog studio (Amek Tac board and ms-16 1 inch tape machine). What would this mic bring to my locker. I currently have a u87ai, a couple of c414eb, A funkwerks tube mic from east Germany (60s) an AT4050 and some sm57s and Senn 421s. Thanks in advance for your collective sage advice. |

This is one of the best ribbon mics around. It is the secret weapon for the nu-metal sound.

Have Fathead', Vinjet, (and an old RCA 'Varicoustic that is a wild card). R121 has the most useful shape out of the box (for it's usual known apps). But take the low mid hump out of the Fathead and for 1/10 the $$.. it's a different flavor.
But the 121 is first pick. No regrets at all on the $$.. ![]()

The R121 is one of the very few mics that I would not want to live without in my studio. I have had mine for years and absolutely love it

do it.
then put it in between two guitar cabinets and invert the phase on one of the speaker cabinets and you get a cool push/pull kind thing goin on the figure 8 mic. really really beefy sound for hard rock. i used a r122 on the record i'm working on now and it sounds beautiful coupled with a 421 close micing the speaker.

Thanks. Trigger has been pulled. How close to a loud amp can you get with this?

I go 4-6" (haven't gone on extremely loud amps yet), but it sounds fine half a foot out. Don't need closer. Apparently it's the loud puffs' and pops that are to be avoided.
Then there's that 'blowing into mics.. 'is this thing on..?' ![]()

if you check out the royer site, there's quite a few pics showing different mic placements and such...if i remember correctly, there's more than a couple showing the mic all the way up against the grillcloth
