using a noise gate
So I want to use noise gates on my recordings, but I'm not quite sure how. There's always this white noise I want to cut out. You can hear it on the song "Untitled" here. How do I figure out what db I need to cut out to get rid of it? Also, how do I know how fast to open the gate, how long to keep it open, and how fast to close it?

I just had a listen to the song and there's not much gating will do for you. I'm guessing you were cranking the gain on the microphone quite a lot? Unfortunately there's not a whole bunch you can do now that it's been recorded. You'll need to either lose most of the high end (which will wreck the sound), or use a de-noise plugin, which tend to either be fairly shit, or be extremely expensive.
Having said that, Adobe Audition has a fairly decent on. But I don't suppose you use that huh? Otherwise, in the future, try and get a better sound level to your microphone by placing it closer to the instrument, or buy a quieter preamp. I doubt it's a problem with self-noise coming from the mic.

always record the guitars with a split from a DI, whether or not you record the amp sound or mic or whatever, definitely record the clean signal from the DI
