yes. im going to be building a jazzmaster, and i need a good bridge pickup. something thats hot, but not TOOOO hot, so that its like un controllable. i play rock music, dont really know how else to describle it. some cleans, some heavy stuff, but no metal. no ridiculous guitar solos over here either.

Try a Seymour Duncan JB... hot, but not to hot, and you can riff and make some ridiculous harmonic minor solos too.

if you want something different, try checking out this brand (link to follow)...I put their "warpig" humbucker in my tele, and it completely transformed the sound...they have soundclips, and many different flavors of pickups...my tele has never sounded so beefy.

No. Even if he wanted the original Jazzmaster pickups, he wouldn't want P-90s. But he doesn't want the original Jazzmaster pickups, cause they suck.

However, if you want a single coil sort of sound out of it, look into getting some Fralin Twangmasters. They'll give you the sound, but without the hum and buzz. Very nice Pickups.

For humbuckers, these days my favorite ones are Lindy Fralin's stuff (they are custom - call him up and tell him what you want and he will help you figure it out). If you are in more of a hurry, Seymour Duncan makes great pickups too. I'm on record saying that my favorite Duncan's are the Alnico II in the neck, and the Pearly Gates in the bridge, and it sounds to me like that would be a great combination for you as well. The Pearly Gates is just a bit hotter than a PAF style pickup, and a little raunchier. Great pickups. You might also try the Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz combo, which is easily the most popular pickup combination on the market, and for good reason. It's a very good sounding, and very versatile combination. Also, Seymour Duncan has a "21 day real world return" policy. Basically, you can exchange any pickup within 21 days if you don't like it - though you MUST get professional installation, and you will have to pay for that installation each time. As long as it's not on an ES-335, though, that is not a huge deal.

thanks alot. i was thinking about the JB. now heres another question for you light,


i was gonna order a warmoth body, and use a standard jm neck. however, in contacts with warmoth, they dont put any bridge mounting holes or anything. normally this isnt a big deal, but i was going to have them paint the body. i was gonna use a normal hardtail/string through body bridge, but now im having second thoughts.

is there any other company you would recommend?

Drilling holes isn't a big deal after it's been painted. I know of a couple luthiers that don't even route for pickups until after they've painted the guitar.

www.allparts.com is a good place too, though.

Don't buy a body from Allparts, they are not well made, but USA Custom is at very least giving Warmoth a run for their money in the quality department, and are probably beating them. They build great stuff - every now and then one of their necks will come into the shop, and we'll all just sit there looking at it going, "damn, that's nice."

does warmoth sell jazzmaster bodies without any bridge holes at all? i have access to a drill press, so drilling for the hardtail bridge is no big deal.

No, they have prices which reflect their very high quality. Anywhere charging less is putting out an inferior product, end of story. Trust me, I've seen them all, and I wouldn't even think of buying a body or neck from anyone but Warmoth or USA Custom Guitars.

Sure, but if you can get what you want from them (and you probably can - call them up and ask, they are very helpful) do so, because if you are going with a string through the body design, you will be quite shocked at how difficult it is to get the string holes to go through the body. The required bit is thin enough that it bends off course quite easily. Save yourself the hassle, and have them do it. It will be easier, and if you fuck it up it will be much cheaper to have them do it. A drill press helps - I've got three of them - but it's not nearly enough.
