To say Shawn Lane was a hack is pretty ignorant, you need to look at his music - kind of a bizarre mix of folk/country/rock/shred/jazz and fussion. The link above is just to an instructional video to demonstrate speed and technique, not a composition. This guy was a way ahead of his time - he was playing crazy stuff in the 70's before the whole shred scene. Many of the top players in the world have cited Shawn Lane as being a major influence who was way ahead of the curve (Vai, Petrucci, Buckethead & Howe among others).

Metalhead, Lane is a master of speed and technique, and maybe a lot of people will critizice him for that. To all of them I'd like to recommend to watch this video. A marvelous trio in which lane played... the guitar solo is simply amazing. Enjoy:

Wow, I couldn't call him a hack by any means. It is unfortunate that so many of the shredder guitarists have such poor tastes in guitar tone though. I have to admit that was a lot of reverb and delay.

But wow, what a technical marvel that guy is. This video is the first I've ever heard of him or actually heard him play. What an intro!

I hadn't heard about him till I went to a club in town to see Black Oak Arkansas play and Shawn Lane was their lead guitarist. He was 15 years old at that time and was burning like crazy back then-he was sneeking a lot of Al Di Meola licks into the tunes constantly and really blew me away!
