Evans EC1 heads
I've never used them. What do yall think? GC is damn near giving these things away this weekend. Starting at $2.99!

Evans is a great company
I've used them and they're good, but not for everybody. I don't think that they'd be good for real heavy hitters. The frosting could have a lot more texture for brushwork, but that's a criticism that I have for a lot of the EC heads and it's a real personal criticism, but they are really good and at that price, you'd be a fool not to pick up some. The company is based about 4 miles from where I live and I'm a real big fan of their heads for kick drums and the regular frosted white heads are the best substitute for the Remo snare heads in terms of sound. Their manufacturing and quality control is almost unmatched in the business.

the EC1's sound fantastic, but ARE NOT for heavy hitters...those would be the EC2's....overall, though, great, great sounding heads. I love Evans...that's all I use =)

I'm a heavy hitter. I play in a hard-rock/punk band. I need a big tom sound. Looks like these heads won't cut it.

WHAT?! Why are you looking for a Remo substitute when they cost the same as Evans (or damn near)??

We're in a personal taste area here
I really love all of the Evans heads, but maybe it's just because I'm used to it, but I really like the response of the Remo Ambassador batter head on my snare drums. I have a few snares that have the Evans heads and they also appeal to me, but I just happen to like the Remo better. I like how the brushes respond on the Remo better.

Oh, undoubtedly - I'm a Remo man as you'll know if you've read any of the discussions on the subject since I joined
![]() Just wondered if you like the ambassador on Snare, why not use the ambassador and not the Evans version? :P I love the Evans EMAD kick for real rock punch, and I've heard some amazing drum sounds with G1 or G2 on toms, but whenever I've used them I just get dead, dead, dead. I like my pinstripes or coated ambassadors, depending on the kit.

I'm a bit on the weird side I guess
I use the Remo Ambassador on my snare head and black pinstripie on my toms and the Evans EMAD on my kick. I am primarily a hard bop and traditional blues drummer when I play drum kit but I like the very "thuddy" sound to my toms. I play a six piece kit (custom made) 8 ply maple shells 10" and 12" small toms and 14" and 16" floor toms all cut shallow.
I play a 20" kick drum and I own a lot of snares but my favorite "go-to" snare for most jobs is my Yamaha birch with wood rims(I also have my old Slingerland snare which I use a lot). I have been using the Evans C1 as my resonator heads on my toms cause they are heavy enough and don't buzz like the real thin ones do. I play with 7A sticks. None of that SHOULD work, but it does. I play 15" hi-hats heavy K on the bottom and a Custom A fast crash as my top (gets great sizzle real easy). I change up my cymbals a lot but the constants are my 24" Avedis ride and a lrft hand 20" sizzle ride and an 18" Custom A fast crash. I don't do things conventionally, but I'm getting what I like from my kit. I have used the coated Evans heads on my snares and I do like them almost as much as my Ambassador. They're a good second. Why do I use them? Cause I'm a gear junkie and I'm always trying out different stuff.

Sounds like a great - not so little - setup! I use my 60's Ludwig when I'm at home (coated ambassadors all round), or my Pearl MLX (Pinstripes), and when I'm at uni I use my Mapex Voyager Bebop kit, which I haven't gigged yet and currently still has stock heads.
Vintage (70's?) Zildjian Avedis 20" ride, 15" crash, 16" china. Paiste 15" Hats, Ludwig 400 snare (although I do use my Mapex 12" as a side snare, probably going to fit with a pinstripe and cover with gaffa for a dead 'smack')... So not bad for a skint 18 year old ![]()

I use EC2's and a I love em. Built in ring gets rid of overtones but doesn't deaden the head. Nice warm sound overall.
