Need advice for Layla20 problem

Hoping someone can help with this problem: have a layla20 that has worked superbly for 8 years. Recently moved it from it's original computer (Win98/Sawplus) to my new computer (XP pro/SawStudioLite). Installed the latest driver (6.11 beta). Sound is terrible...static/distortion. Tried every buffer setting combination possible...best is 6 buffers/512 samples...but still the sound is unusable. Have tried Purewave, WDM and ASIO modes...all with the same results. This Dell dimension 8400 has a built in sound driver (Sound Max). Please advise and THANK YOU!

Wish I could help you. I run wdm drivers on my layla 24's. I never get issues that way.

I've tried asio and purewave but they seem more glitchy.

I personally always disable the stock sound card and make the echo my default card. I also always disable computer sounds so the computer won't send 8 bit low sample rate sounds through the card.

I am not familiar with your editing software. I would swap out any cables to double check that you dont have a coincidence going on.

Make sure that there are no settings in yout echo console or in your editing software that exceed the bit and sample rate of your card.

You might also try reinstalling the drivers if all elses fails. Maybe go to a previous driver release.

Good Luck.

That is a must.

I will say, over the last 8 years I have had TWO Layla20's bite the dust on me.

HOWEVER!! I now own a Layla3G.

btw... the beta drivers you are using are all that are available for XP, if I am not mistaken.

I agree also. For my Mia I do use the ASIO drivers for out's 1-6 and WDM for 7 and 8, which I've made Windows' default audio device. The WDM drivers helped some issues for playback with various other programs.

Hey Mix,

How do you like that 3g. I have a Layla 24/96 and wondered if it would be a step up or down. As for the Layla 20 question, I had to have someone else put my soundcard in, so I can't help much. Wish I could!

Has your Layla had the power supply upgrade from the manufacturer. The original bridge rectifier in the breakout box is undersized and goes bad from heat. After a while you'll get static, poping sounds and distortion. If you send it to Event they will replace it for free, or send you one to put in yourself if you want.

You can also use this one from Radio Shack if you don’t want to wait.

It could be other issues as well, but this is one to be aware of.

Not mix, but do currently use a 3G. I had a Gina 24 before the 3G, and I can say there is a difference in sound quality. Not night and day, but the converters and clock are certainly better on the 3G, and the high-end and low-end are more tight and focused.

The 3G has two built-in pres which I've found very usable. YMMV and I've read some gripes about them, but IMO they're pretty clean and have decent gain. For built-in pre's, they get the job done.

I've been using ASIO drivers with the 3G and it's been pretty stable. Haven't tried the WDM/KS drivers - not sure if they would better or not than ASIO.
