Event 20/20.. Just not cutting it. Add a sub, or new monitors?

Hey guys!
It seems like I cant hear the bass in my active event 20/20's. They sound fine, it seems like the bass just isnt where it should be, like its db's lower. Im wondering if I should sell these and get new set or monitors. Or if I should get some sort of active sub to add on to supplement. What are your opinoins?

I do mostly acoustic rock type of music. Mostly acoustic instruments and electric bass. Not a lot of drum kits.

Thanks so much,
Josh

It's probably your room...

I've considered this, but the fact remains that when I mix with my "B reference" set of monitors (basic stereo system - Bose cube speakers placed on top of my Events, with a Bose Sub under the desk) it sounds great, but I know Im not getting it all. Its just for stereo reference. Plus aren't nearfields supposed to not depend as much on the room? The room is irregularly shaped and has an arched typed of ceiling. I'm pretty sure I'm hearing whats coming from the monitors and Im missing the low end. I should A/B some mackies or somthing (go to Guitar center and get a rental set ).

It's more likely that you're hearing exaggerated and hyped bass from the Bose speakers.

Oh come on now - Inaccurate and skewed low end from Bose? What's next?!?

Walk around your room while the music plays and see if you can find your low end.

Well your right, I found the low end does increase when I do a bit of walking around. What should I do about it?

My friend has 20/20's and the bass seems to be fairly loud imo. I thought they were a bit bass heavy to be honest. I think room treatment never hurts. I personally like using a sub as well though. I do not mix with a sub though, i just reference it as well as turn it on when i'm actually tweeking sounds at a low frequency. I find this to be a great way to go when you have little control over the room. I personally would not invest in new monitors just for lowend because i don't think you will get what you want. If you want to upgrade to something nicer for other reasons, sure, but not just for that.

I can believe it's a room issue. I have Event TR-6s that sounded incredible in my last house in a smallish, but sufficiently non-reflective room. When I moved however, I lost all my bottom end. I would've never believed the room made that big a difference.

I've seen multiple threads around here with tips or links to tips on prep'ing rooms. Eliminating corners and breaking up parallel surfaces, i.e. walls. Check in recording techniques forum.
