Maybe you could give us some details. What gear do you want running through the mixer? I'm not familiar with your sound card. How many ins does it have?

maybe build a small shelf over the mixer...something that is flat for the monitors and then dips in front of them slightly with a lip on it for the controller...so it's at the right angle to reach it somewhat...would be a lttle less erginomic to reach the trim pots and other knobs toward the top of the mixer, but it would be way better than having the controller too far away... I used to have my controller to my side and it was REALLY hard.. now it's right on my desk in front of my monitor and fuck if it's not a lot easier.

or maybe just build up the shelf a bit higher than you're monitors are on, so you can push the mixer further back on the desk then... maybe there will be room for the controller

well...if you have a soundard that has a bunch of outputs or inputs... you'd probably just take the individual outputs fromt he card to the inputs of the channel mixers (if you want to mix outside the box but play back the tracks from the computer)

or if this is mostly for recording into your computer the outputs of the channels to the inputs on your card... or if you want to use the mixer to record a fuckload of shit into just two channels (like a drum kit or something) just put the main outputs on the board to the inputs on the sound card... it really just kind of depends on what you have on the computer end, and what you want to use it for.

yeah im gonna switch them soon but
anyways
digi 001 8 in 8 out
i want to premix in the box then send them back through 8 channels back to the mixer so i can return the main mix at the end back to protools through the main outs
my mixer has this "mix b" thing that i've been reading about ...anyone familiar with that
i hear alot that i have to return the 8 channels from the digi into the tape ins of the last 8 channels on the mixer

but im not sure yet..im pretty confused
the biggest thing im confused with is where to plug in the headphones for the artist

Why? I'm no digital expert, but it would seem to defeat the purpose of ITB. Thats 4 conversions.

1. Analog sound to digital input
2. Digital mix to analog input at mixer
3. Analog output to protools digital
4. Digital media to analog EARS

Whats the purpose of the analog mixer if you already mixed ITB, and you have protools? What am I missing here?

not up to date with the tascam you have though I remember using one many years ago.

Mixer outputs: the main outs go to your 2 track recorder (or back in the soundcard on 2 channels), control room outs feed your monitors, if you're lucky you get A & B outputs to switch against and stodio output feedy your headphone amp. Sometimes you get a studio output on the desk with a volume and a set of buttons to select what's going there i.e. the L/R mix, aux 1 or 2,. the monitor mix or the control room mix

Nice little desk for what it's worth. The pre's are useable and I remember the EQ being quite tight and punchy on the bottom end.

So, if you're sending 8 submixed channels back to the desk I have to ask why? do you plan using outboard effects? cause that gets tricky with submixes at times and every mix starts turning into a head scratching exercise. I send 24 channels back to my board but i find myself using less and less outboard gear since I got a UAD-1 card. Basicaly I'm using the board for zero latency recording and headphone mixes and not having to piddle about with a mouse for EQ, otherwise I'd save maself a headache and mix completely in the box I think. Software summing has come on lots in the last few years but that's a whole different argument we don't need to get into.

Best of luck with it anyways

Well, I had to stop working on it for a couple of weeks for Christmas "honey do this and honey do that stuff. I'll be back at it in a few days. Thanks for asking.

How about I give you how I would hook it up and if you like it you can try it.
I would hook up the 8 buss outs from the board to the sound cards 8 ins. This will maximize your flexibility. You can record a whole band at once and buss the drums to busses 1 & 2, bass to buss 3, guitar 1 to buss 4, guitar 2 to buss 5, keys to busses 6 & 7 and vocals to buss 8. You can also buss each mic on the drumset to an individual buss if you like. So you can seperate the drums onto individual tracks. It just depends on how creative you get. All's it takes is some button pushing on the mixer. I would also take the monitor L & R out on the sound card and go directly to the headphone amp. Also I would use the main outs on the sound card to go to the monitors. Just an idea for set-up.

I didn't know you had external comp's. I do my EQ and Dynamics on the computer. Your adding extra noise to the mix by doing it through the mixer. Not to mention you can save your settings on the computer and the eq's in the software are more precise.

i finally got it hooked up after 3.5 hours of straight research on the web but now i have a stupid little problem that i have..

evey channel has 4 aux nobs and they say pre on one side and post on the other
i have 4 aux sends and 4 effect returns...
if i was to hook up an eq or a comp would i hook it up from the aux send to the in of the eq and the out of the eq to the effect in?

i have been reading and eveybody says to put it in the channel insert but does that mean that i need an eq for every track in the mixer?

The AUX knobs work both ways depending on whether you turn it left or right. Turn it to the left it is a level for pre. Turn it to the right it is a level for post. AUX are used for FX not dynamics. If you were to put an EQ or a compressor into the AUX it would sound bad. The inserts are for compression. You already have EQ on each strip why would you want to add more?

Hey elicantu, man, you are asking the questions that result from facing a BIG board. Take it slow and LOOK at a block diagram Look in the manual for your mixer to see the signal path for every question you have. If you don't have a manual, get one as soon as you can, maybe on ebay. Without it, you, and everyone else is guessing what you arre trying to do. Its like building an engine. If you don't know the fireing sequence, you are shit out of luck.
