How did they get the drums to sound like this?

What do you think was done to get the kick to have such POWER in these recordings? It has a nice thwap and still sound full.

hmmm maybe mics inside as usual, but a mic aimed at the kick a few feet away too? I got some pretty insane kick once by using re20s for room mics at around waist level. It was a really agressive sound, esp when compressed right (picked up the snare nice too), almost could have just used the room mics without anything else...(in fact I used a tiny bit of the kick mic, very small ammount of the snare and hi-passed OHs just to get the upper end of the cymbals.

Drum tuning, and a solid drummer.

I haven't heard this yet, but consider this:

You wouldn't beleive the lengths they go to get some of these sounds.

On a good budget, flying in 30 different drum kits to try out, a few dozen of each cymbal type, then the kind of stuff they do to mic nice sounds...

it's fun.

Of course, a badass drummer, a good tuning and a good *cough* engineer don't hurt.
