Do any of you get completely pissed off with recording?
Do any of you get pissed off with recording from time to time, and it becomes a chore to even turn on the old studio computer? Or is it just me?

I can't get pissed at tasks. But I can get exasperated with people.
EDIT: Oops, Lee beat me to it! G. |

It can be pretty frustrating. But usually the tracking stage, trying to nail everything in one take.
Mixing and stuff doesn't bother me, and for my stuff with only a few tracks on average, doesn't take more than 10 minutes. ![]() |

Glen, I suppose, that's a better explanation of where I'm at. God damn, sometimes dealing with musicians is a bitch. arg!

hahaha yeah, something like that.
like, A bassist saying, hey I want my bass louder, comparing to the tracking mix that I was editing to, which they insisted I give them, which was basically a session set up with just the bass and a stereo bounce of the track (too many parts and shit to have it all going at once when tracking..esp with "virtual amps running") the bass being twice as loud as everything else.. and of course lots of what you mentioned... The usual musician's behaviour lots of ...can I sit in on the entire mix process for this album? NOOOOOOOO!!!! lol |

I'm lately getting all tyred of just being all day with my gear.
And usually when I get to that blocking stage, I get away from the project from a while to come back with refreshed ears. |

eh...i just get pissed when my computer is screwed up
for instance, i have song i'm working on right now that has a corrupt session file. when recording overdubs, it won't give me a pre-count in. it also crashes my DAW if i try to import or export tracks from the session, and now it won't even let me move anything within a track. talk about frustrating. |

I can honestly say that I've learned to tune most of it out through the years.
Although the questions can sometimes get annoying. Not so much when it's just a single question at a time. That I can handle. It's when they start hitting you from all angles.Do you have an extra tuner? I need a tuner RIGHT NOW. You mean you don't have a tuner? Where's the nearest place where I can get a tuner? Can I use your phone so I can call my girlfriend and have her pick me up an extra tuner? Do you have any extra strings? I prefer light-top heavy-bottoms if you have 'em. Could you please drop what you're doing right now and address my tuner and string emergency? Oh shit, my tube just blew. Do you have any extra EL34's just lying around? Did you do anything with my pick? I just had my pick sitting right there. Who took my pick? What does this knob do? Why can't I hear myself in the headphones? Where's your bathroom? Can I have a glass of water? Can you put this CD in your player so I can rehearse to it? Now about that pick ... . |

Yea, when its hourly, they can do whatever they want... wasted time sucks, but if it can't be avoided, you might as well get paid
![]() As for myself, since I don't run any sort of studio that accepts clients... I get bored with it as much as I get frustrated. When I have sat down and tried to get a nice acoustic guitar sound and 487 tries later it still sounds boomy, or thin, or boomy AND thin (which has happened and amazes me), I start to get frustrated and bored with the whole process. Then I go away and work on one of the many other types of projects I get involved in, and a couple days later, I am really excited to get home from work to find 487 more ways NOT to do something in my makeshift "studio" ![]()

Most of it is just frustration. I only get to record maybe a few times in a week, so time is limited. Sometimes when I do have the time and the house is cleared out, I just plain don't feel like recording, and that is frustrating in its own way.
Then there are times where I go to record a guitar or vocal part, and think it sounds great that day, and then the next day it sounds like total ass to my ears. Then I have to go through the process of rerecording the stuff, and possibly do it a third time if it happens again. Lately a lot of the frustration is due to the state of my guitar right now. I don't have money for strings, and the strings that are on it are old as hell. It really messes with the innotation. So between every take on this latest track, I've been tuning up, and tuning up, and tuning up, etc. The tracks I'm recording now require use of a capo, and innotation problems + capo = hell for staying in tune. I'm still a noob on the recording thing, so there's a lot of noob problems I have as well. Even though I know these things, it's easy to forget since it's not really "routine" at this point. Case and point being in the song I'm recording, I recorded the distortion guitar with too much gain and mids, so I have to go back and redo that. Ugh.... |

yeah........
i only record my own stuff but sometimes I will sit there for an entire day trying to nail a guitar part. or for 6 months working on an album. I haven't turned my gear on in two weeks and im in the middle of a project...I just need to unplug for a bit. |

I get frustrated sometimes when I put lots of work in and the finished product doesn't turn out like I want it to. When I feel like I'll never get good at this recording thing I just go back and listen to my old tracks and it becomes pretty obvious how much progress I have made.
Lately though I'm running into the law of diminishing returns. Going from total crap recording/mixes to passable demo was fairly easy. Getting from passable demo to "pro" sounding is proving to be much more difficult. Sometimes I just need a break. It's like my brain gets tired. If I'm hitting it pretty hard at work and school I find I don't have the mental energy to work in the studio. |

A lot of times I will look back and regret wasting all the hours I spent mixing a piece of crap.

I get pissed with not recording. One of my monitors is busted at the moment meaning I can't do an awful lot in the way of mixing. And fuck knows when I can afford to either get it fixed or replace the set.
I never really get pissed off with recording or mixing or whatever. It can start to drain me I guess at times. At which point I just down tools and go do something else until I get the urge to go back to it.
