Did I miss something...rep points

I've been AWOL for a while and on my return I have noticed that the rep points for some of the good folk on this forum have skyrocketted to perverse heights. Did I miss something? Or has everybody been incredibly helpful and friendly to each other in my absence. Perhaps the system has been abused! I went through lots of threads and there still seems to be the same level of profanity, sarcasm and ' do a search you asshole' type comments, so I think I can discount the help/friendly aspect. In fact it all seems to be pretty much the same and I feel very comfortable again. Can anyone enlighten me please. (or should I just call myself an asshole and do a search.)

But, I was at 6006 and now I am at 35000, that is 6 times. If you do in fact wield such power....can you somehow get me to exactly 100,000 (I just like the round numbers.) Is it kind of like frequent flyer points?

No, when I repped you, it went from 6-something to 15-something. So I more than doubled your rep, but others must have repped you as well to get you to where you are now. This is how rep works. You don't have to be intelligent or helpful. Just be funny or merely mention rep in any thread and you will get repped. It really has no value whatsoever. I'm over a million in rep, and I'm about as useless as they come.

case in point:
i was going to rep greg here, but i haven't "spread it around" enough yet. not that it matters.
but note how i pointed out something rep-related, more specifically my good, but failed, INTENT to increase greg's rep. this will hopefully earn me more points, since i'm well below the million mark.
and mandrake, i was one of the ones who repped you just for mentioning rep, so it would be especially ungrateful of you to not rep me back.
of course, the danger here is that some sourpuss like rami will give me negative points just for pointing this out, which could put me right back at zero, since he's earned his rep largely by being useful around here, which is a claim i cannot make.
now go forth and do likewise.

ok, out of guilt and appreciation I have reciprocated. Not being a very experienced man in the art of repping I dont know how generous I was. Does one get a choice in how many rep thingies one can bestow upon another? R there any rep consultants around here?

how much rep you give is a function of how much you have. it's a percentage though i have no idea what the number is.

now that rep point nirvana has been acheived, maybe we should have a race back to zero. The lowest numbers being the most learned among us.
We should be seeing posts like this...."Thanks for your help, I just slashed 5000 off your rep points" or " You idiot, do a search, here take 10.000 reppies for being such a pain in the ass".
