i hate your kikc sound.

well, maybe not yours.
but the "in" kick sound for rock and metal is really starting to grate on me.
pro recordings by awsome people and all, most of them just don't sound like kicks to me.

they mix well, don't get me wrong, but it's a sound born of utility not of love.
(at least that's how i see it)
guitars on the other hand sound amazing lately.

am i alone here? any one else think that that sound sucks?

(mini rant over)

Most sounds that become "in" sounds have wore out their welcome long before they became "in". Some call it running to where lightning last hit. Others call it copy-cating. Either way, it has nothing to do with music.

Screw what's "in" or what's "out" or what anybody else does. Just imagine a sound you want and then build it. If it happens to sound like something else, so be it. If not, also so be it.

when you say the "in" kick sound.......are you referring to the modern day "clickitty click click" sound of the overly bright beater, and almost no warmth and punch?

....if so......yeah, me too.......sounds like someone tapping on a tin can.

I like it on metal, but yeah it's been done now. I mean there is still room for click, but I'd like to hear the varieties of click expanded rather than the race to get it as loud as possible, with nothing in between 60Hz and 4kHz.

I don't get it at all when I hear it on a rock song.

Are you talking about the cardboard-sounding kicks? A lot of people (not including myself) seem to like that sound. We did an experiment in class where we stuck a bunch of mics inside the drum (one at a time) and most of my classmates liked the same sound we're hating on... Ugh. But we stuck a D6 in there, and that was beautiful...

I'm not exactly a fan of Dancing with the Stars ...

But a lot of people still like it and watch it for some reason.

It's perfectly okay to not like what is "in" or popular at the moment.

I'm trying to create a new popular movement where all the kick hits are placed by a dog bark. And not just any dog bark. One with lots of body. You know, one that really cuts through the mix.

Its preference. I guess you mean a clicky kick sound that you hear alot in meta. Alot of people like it. Some dont. Its how you want your kick to sound in the mix.

The first time I heard that was on Metallica's "And Justice For All" album. Did Lars start that? I recall that I didn't care for it too much then either. I like bass drums to *thump* and not *plink*...

Don't listen to Strung Out's "Exile In Oblivion". That's the worse kick sound I've ever heard. I prefer the beach ball sound to that clicky thing. It was more like kick accompanied by band.... Amazing album besides that one MAJOR deficiency.

the wierd thing about that drum sound is, if your system reveals it, there is the instant 'wet fish' click but with a huge deep bass boom at the back of it. It's actually quite wild and while fun can lose control when you're playing that album back loudly - it can kill everything haha. I love the sound of that even though I know it's wrong.

I think that clicky kick can be ok in some stuff(mostly that machine gun metal), but i hate it in general. The kick on Metallica's untitled album is amazing. See: Nothing Else Matters. I think it's purrrfect.

And I agree about the guitars, A lot of the top40 rock/pop stuff has amazing guitars.

You're right. The best kick sounds are from good old John Bonham, as well as Ian Paice and other 70's stuff.

They will teach that in recording schools, as if it's always been that way, and will act like the world is ending when someone records in any other way.. and the cycle continues. . . =D

I prefer my kick drum to have uhm........ kick?
I have found it is much tougher to get a boomy kick to sit right in the mix though.

that's true usually.
i'm not sure boomy is the sound i'm exactly looking for, but the thub/click sound does mix well. i hink that's why it gets so much love, not because anyone thinks it should really sound that way.

I don't like a really "clicky" kick, what I do like is an up front and big (but not overly boomy) kick sound, and I think there's a difference between them. For instance the clickiness people talk about is usually achieved with more than just EQ, it's a combination of mic positions (and the click itself is largely a result of the mic near the beater, and type of beater used).. then it's EQ'd and compressed to high hell..

While I like some click, what I prefer is "air".. nice bottom end, nice top end, and the mids where they need to be to define it in the mix. I like it to sound like you're right there in the studio with the band listening over the monitors/phones and the drums are up in your face.. more often than not that feeling is lost somewhere along the line.
