AKG C 200 B (Worthy of 2 bills?)

Hey I am alloted 200 bucks (American) for Christmas and really don't know squat about mics, I want the mic mainly for vocals but it would be cool if it could be used for other things.

Here's the AKG C 200 B ....

http://tinyurl.com/23798o

http://tinyurl.com/2yjvxx

Can I do better than this for the price?

The local music store here has the same mic (with shock mount) He wants 2 bills also but I think I can get it for 185.00

i made the mistake of buying one of those years and years ago when i was first starting out. i never use the damn thing anymore, there's pretty much nothing it sounds great on IMO, and i've tried to get some use out of it. i've just never preferred it over another mic if i had more than 1 mic available.

Hey, make a deal with zed32. I disagree with him completely. I consider it one of the most versatile mics on the planet for under $200. It's a killer on cabs, toms, and hand percussion. Also a fair overhead, and a pretty good vocal mic, especially for female vox. They are out there on ebay for about $150 with the shock mount. The shock mount, BTW, is very versatile and will fit a lot of small diaphragm mics.-Richie

The mic is 2.1" diameter. I'd think it would be more likely to fit LDC's.

the only useful thing i found it for is as a drum room mic. it actually did pretty well picking up the entire drum kit. i don't like it at all on vox, its not great on acoustic guitar, i've actually never tried it on a guitar cab. i've used it on backing vox just as a different flavor. but i kinda have a thing about selling gear...i can't bring myself to do it haha. i wouldn't buy it again for 200 thats for damn sure...and i wouldn't recommend it as a first mic especially on vox. you can do much better.

I just checked e-bay and saw a couple of the 4033 up for bid, it looks like they go for around 250 used though and that's over my limit.

I'll consider bidding on one if I can get some more witnesses to back you up on this. I really know nothing about vocal mics at all but I want the best one I can get for my money.

The 4050's are out of my price range all together

Wrong-O. The H-100 shock mount locks to the approximately 1" stem of the mic. I use the H-100 routinely with Neumann KM184's, Oktava MC012's, and Studio Projects C-4's, as well as the C414, which it was designed for. The lock is secure and adjusts easily, so it will accomodate a wide variety of mics, such as Studio Projects B-1, Baby bottle, AKG D112, MXL 603's, lots of stuff. It's one of the best shock mounts ever made. There are a number of mics that it won't fit though. You have to have some kind of shaft from about 3/4" to about 1".- Richie

What kind of voice and what kind of music?

It makes a difference.

Don't even think about it, Fiddler! You'll look soooo stupid in the Emergency Room. And the amputation is likely to be pretty ugly.-Richie

Aha! So I see. Thanks.

My shaft, of course, won't fit.
