Anyone tried the Rode D-Powerplug?

Hi. Has anyone tried the Rode D-Powerplug? Apparently it boost 20dB of gain to your mic. I'm thinking of getting one of these for my T.Bone RM700 ribbon mic?

I don't see how extra gain helps unless it's quiet gain. The noise level of the Rode is -115dBA, not particularly great compared with a good preamp which could be 10dB quieter (or more). So I think I would save the money towards a better preamp.

I would be inclined to agree. For an extra ~50 bucks you can easily find one of the couple decent low-budget preamps that provides ample gain for just about any mic.

I guess if you need one, it has uses. Like long cable runs. Running a ribbon mic on a cord with phantom power enabled. Or if you just need that extra 20dB of gain. It is quite costly, and has a noise floor in addition to your preamps floor. I was thinking of getting one just so I don't fry my ribbon by accidentally using phantom power. Or otherwise use my ribbon in addition to an LDC on a preamp/interface that has only one phantom power button for it's two channels of input.
