Preamps for Recorderman

Hey Fellas...

I'm looking for a dual mic pre rack unit to serve as preamps for my drum overheads, using the recorderman method. I've got about 400 bucks to spend, maybe more. Hopefully less.

I'm going to be recording mainly with a pair of AKG Perception 200s. Right now, I have an ART Tube Pre, and a Presonus tube pre as well. I like them both, and though the dual pre will be used mainly for recording drums, i'd like to use it for other applications as well.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

M-Audio DMP3 comes to mind. I've never heard a single bad thing about it and most people say it competes with preamps well above its price range.

The least expensive is the DMP-3.
I have several of them and love them on Drums and acoustic instruments, they are very clean.
They are not really a 1 rack space unit though. It is a half rak wide but slightly over a rack high so it takes up 2 racks spaces. I have 2 racked side by side.
They dont have the headroom or mid range meatyness of the RNP but they really are a good pre to have for a variety of sources. A similar pre would be a RANE MS-1 (single channel) but it does not have a meter, but 2 could be racked side by side in a 1 rack shelf with no problems.

Good luck

Indeed...

It was great advice. I think I'm going to go with the DMP3. That will give me enough money left over in the budget to also snag a beta 52, which will really hook shit up, unless someone suggests something out of left field.

Thanks!
