group buy?

I just had a thought....

I'm participating in the microphone group buy, and was wondering about
a guitar group buy.
Or course i am in no way volunteering to organize it, too busy right now.
I suppose you could just buy an agile or bryce import, they are certainly
cheap enough.

Thing is, i have odd taste in guitars. I'm not interested in the les paul/strat/tele
stuff. Done to death. i wonder how many units you would need for a custom design?
Would love a stratotone, frame guitar, nylon solidbody, electric uke, you know
something different. Gotta think most folks have a "regular" guitar by now.

Electric uke sounds good, definitely.

I'd be interested in an electric sitar in the $100 range. $300 is more than I want to pay.

Another would be acoustic lap steel for cheap.

we tried to organize a custom guitar group buy at a guitar forum a long time ago. it didn't work out. the hard part is agreeing on a design!

yeah, i can see that would be a challenge.
How a guitar looks and feels is personal.
But maybe a couple of simple designs if they were cheap enough would
work.
Maybe a sitar with just the buzz bridge and one pickup, no resonating strings.
I agree: $100 is about right for me.
An electric uke: same deal.
Maybe we could even order them unfinished or in kit form if people couldn't
decide on color/pickups.

I've been thinking about making my own, but time is hard to find for projects.

There used to be a great electric mandolin kit (four strings) from Saga for 100 bucks. Unfinished, but already wired. Don't think it's still available, though.
