I learn alot from Church musicians......Many of them tend to have some type of Music Edu. They also have contacts and you can network and learn from them as well. Not trying to preach to you or tell you to go to Church for that reason. But, I have found many musical mentors, both young and old, in the
Church. And they are just starving to share what they have with ya!

I think knowing music theory would help you a lot. Its like how you can play bass and get to a certain point, where you can play other people's songs perfectly. But once you learn theory then you can rise past that point and start to freestyle on the instrument, to where it doesn't sound pre-thought up but still sounds really good. So like the last guy said, I would also highly recommend trying to learn an instrument in addition to basic theory. You don't really even need to be that great. I am actually pretty terrible at bass but good enough that it really helps me when I am trying to make melodies for beats. I wish I knew piano, I think that would make a huge difference.

hell yea saxophone represent

The only thing is, as good as I was at saxophone in band, that didn't really teach me a whole lot about music. Like I could play all the scales, but they never really taught me what that meant or expand on that with my knowledge. I didn't understand until I started playing bass and making beats why saxophone music is written in the e flat key, and I didn't know how to transpose between sax and concert keys until a few months ago. They just don't stress that sort of thing in band, so playing saxophone doesn't really translate to good knowledge about music. You can use your saxophone to help you with melodies but I wouldn't recommend trying to work out everything on the sax then trying to translate it to piano, cause that would take a while.

If you learn more about theory you'll start to understand a lot more about the saxophone as well as about making melodies in general. If I had the understanding back then that I do now I probably would have been an even better saxophonist but there's too many kids in band that don't really care to try to stop and teach the interested ones about how music works.

I am going through that process as well so i feel you. I started taking piano lessons last year because i really want to read sheet music. I also want to learn more dynamic chord progressions like in jazz. It adds a whole other level to your knowledge base. Since you are producing more than likely you are using the keys more... a good gospel/jazz piano teacher can work wonders on your theory... at least that's worked for me. I was really struggling with structure for awhile. I feel like i am getting better with ever new song i put together.

Not a wierd or bad idea at all man. learning some music theory and/or how to play a piano i think would help anyone out. im trying to do this now myself.

look on craigslist, theres usually people there advertising their services in regards to music. I found a guy in my city willing to come to my apartment once a week, and teach my how to play piano, and throw in some lessons on music theory. im going to take him up on it when I have a steady income.

you were talking about stepping your game up, thats the best way to do it... learn more about how to do it. knowing what youre doing really does seperate people who make it from those who dont. thats on the technical side of it, and the theory side of it.
and theres no better time to start than now.

the cheapest/fastest way:

buy a fawkin kiddy keyboard with lights on the keys and everything

make sure it has plenty of classical piano songs in it's built-in chip

play along with those songs...in no time you'll have a sense of chords and variations...then you can apply what you learned to an instrumental

try it once...then make a beat...i guarantee you'll find it is more musical than one you made prior to attempting this!

The cheapest way isn't going to get you where you need to be. Pressing buttons is not Music Theory.

True....Just a suggestion....It got me where I needed to be....I can let you guys here some things i have composed with no classical music training nor music theory what so ever.....You'd never know!

To each his own is what i say. If you plan on composing Sonatas, Operettas, or Symphonies my way won't work....I'll let you know now!!!

But if your a hip hop/R&B producer like myself who just wants to add a little more "music" to your music it will!

Some of the most successful producers in this genre have no classical music training nor theory under their belt, yet somehow manage to makes millions year after year!
