DVerb eminating extremely loud digital static noise...

Anybody else had this happen? On several different unrelated sessions, upon opening them I get an EXTREMELY loud digital static noise that lasts anywhere between 4 and 10 seconds. It's abrupt, it comes out of the master fader, and it scares the sh*t outta me every time. Here are my specs:

-MacBook Pro (intel)

-OS X 10.4.10

-Pro Tools LE 7.3

-Digi002

(I'm starting to believe it's some sort of internal feedback, as it happens only when DVerb is on it's own Aux channel. Well, actually, I'm not sure if that's the only time as I don't use reverb on individual channels 99% of the time, but each of the 4 times it's happened, it's been that way.)

Use a PC?
Make sure you download any updates to DVerb?
Don't use DVerb? Try Ambience ("free" with a VST-to-RTAS adapter).

Here's a scary thing: I had that happen to me, too, and it turned out to be related to Grid vs. Slip mode. For some reason, if I moved something around in Grid mode, it would give me the static screech upon playback. BUT...if I switched back to Slip mode before playback, no problems. Mind you, I thought it was a PC problem, but if it's happening on your Mac, it may be a PT problem.

However, what you're describing sound a bit different, though no less terrifying. Scared the piss outta me for quite a while before I figured out what was going on. Friggin' ProTools.

guys,,im in the middle of a session here and ive just got horrendous feedback seemingly coming through every channel,
and the levels have suddenly shot up to maximum.

could that be because i use Dverb on individual channels instead of doing the aux channel thing(which i cant get my head around yet)?

if so,,why wont it go away when i remove those reverb plugins?
im stumped here, and dont know how to salvage my session

I hate to mention the no-brainer, but have you rebooted the computer and PT interface? That tends to fix mystery feedback issues on mine, anyway...

this time the session opened with no feedback,,but i could hear it gradually grow and grow until all channel levels shot up to maximum

which left me stuck again and unable to continue

i removed all reverb plugins from the session, but that did nothing either

now im even more screwed,,
as ive opened a different session and again all levels are up at maximum
with the feedback again

i got a firewire drive the other day,as ive been advised that previous freezing problems were caused by my usb ext drive not being fast enough

but earlier today i tried to save to the new drive and it told me
"my book cannot be designated as an audio volume because it is not a valid audio volume"
which is all greek to me to be honest

i searched online and found similar problems, but the advice offered suggested uninstalling/reinstalling pro tools and suchlike

which is something i dont even think id know how to do,
as it was a nightmare to get it running in the first place

i havent fiigured out how to get using the firewire drive for Pro Tools yet,,

but

ive just shut it down and my session opened up with no feedback

so,,,for want of a better phrase,,WTF?

Ok, here are the steps you must take to eliminate the feedback you're experiencing.

1 - Physically unplug everything from your interface except for what is necessary to start Pro Tools.

2 - Start a new Pro Tools session with no tracks whatsoever.

Does it feed back? If so, you have some sort of insane hardware problem with your interface that can't be fixed. However, more than likely, it's a software issue.

Just to make sure you're aware, what causes feedback is creating a loop, either virtually or physically, that sends the output signal back to the input signal in some way, either through the air (in the case of microphones and guitars), or through physical cables (if you've plugged an output into an input on your interface), or virtually through sends & returns.

*EDIT: By the way, the issue you're having is most likely completely separate from the issue I continue to have with DVerb.

Hi Steve
thanks lot for the reply also

it seems that this was something to do with my new firewire drive
the noise has now gone, but im still none the wiser

its all very odd
i hope you can figure out your Dverb problem as well,
as im sure it will happen to me sooner or later as well!

cos everything else seems to be!

You're going in to many directions.

This has NOTHING to do with your original problem. It's Pro Tools doing it's job. Under your Pro Tools "Windows" pull down menu there is a workspace manager. It is a fundamental Pro Tools tool designed to protect your drives. Switch it to record.

Don't do that however until you properly format your drive.

The feedback problem could be many things but my first reaction would be a loop somewhere. My second reaction would be to pitch the preferences. SteveH's suggestion to trouble shoot by process of elimination is a good one. Open a new (more controllable session) and see if you can re-create the loop.

Do as you want but I would NOT be re-installing Pro Tools before I had a better idea as to where the problem seems to be.

If you do decide to re-install be SURE you un-install first.

Hi Joseph
thanks for replying again to the latest drama

i tried the workspace options mate, but it wont allow me to do so
The drive was apparently plug and play for use on the mac
So i havent gotten into any formatting at all with it yet
i just plugged the bugger in!

oh,,believe me,,
i will not be attempting any uninstall /reinstall unless im desperate;-)
as i have enough trouble with ordinary stuff as it is

all i know is that as soon as i powered down the new drive it was fine!

Properly format your drive. It is vital you do so AND once formatted it will allow you to select the "record" value for the drive.

Go to your applications drive. Open applications folder. Look for a "Utilities Folder"

Go to Disk Utilities. Highlight the drive to be formatted in the left hand side of the page.

I think for this situation select "Partition". For the type select Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

hi Joseph

i dont see how to select the option for "Partition"

"edit"
strange,i edited this earlier to say,,
i found that option,as i was looking at"My Book"rather than the part saying how much space there was

so i THINK its done it correctly
as ive opened up a session and its saved to the new drive

thank you Joseph, thats fantastic help and advice
and one problem solved

Normally when I get that sound it's when I set up let's say bus 3-4 then i forget and route bus 3-4 on top of the aux input that i set to be 3-4. So just make sure everything is routed correctly. Because as others have said it's not a dverb issue something else is going on there.

Surely it's just as easy to put D-Verb on an aux channel and route a send from each channel you want reverb on to that aux channel?

D-Verb is a piece of crap anyway - think about getting a decent reverb plugin for anything serious
