Too much for the laptop or is it Reaper

I've got a song that has 19 instrument/vocal tracks, and 4 tracks as busses. When I load it, Reaper freezes up, lags, takes too long to process, and won't play it.

But it let me get it this far without any problems (I started the project in v1.888, so maybe?...)

What do I need to do to fix this? I suppose I should delete the Reaper file and reload the whole thing, huh?

Not that much work, so I suppose I could do that. This song is one of the best I've tracked so far, so it's not effects heavy or not a lot of editing needed.

I probably blabbed enough to answer my own question, too...

It's a Toshiba Satellite L35, I think. It's running 1.47GB Intel Celeron M processor and 1GB of RAM. I don't record to it. I use my MR-8 and transfer the tracks, so I am not worried about latency.

As far as the soundcard, it's a stock soundcard. It's not an audio interface. Like I said, I don't record into it.

So did I overload the program or what? I didn't have a shitload of effects on it, only some reverb and some compression. I know they are time based, so maybe... But I didn't have it on every track either....

when did things start freezing? after adding the last track or plugin? is this a project that your coming back to and now it's freezing things up? you said that you started the project in 1.8. does it run ok in 1.8? you're running 2.0 now?

btw, using a higher latency will ease the strain on your system. what is your latency? are you using asio4all?

Did you switch out/disable the sound card since you last had Reaper open? (Before the problems started).

I've done this and in older versions it just crashed. Now, I think you have to go to Options -> Devices and reset it to use the correct device.

I started the project in 1.888, and it started hickuping when I loaded it into 2.0. I figured out that I had to reload some plugins, and it seems to have cleared up.

As far as latency, I've never dealt with it, and I don't have clue how to check it.

Upper right corner, it will say something like 256 samples and X amount of milliseconds, what every it is double it see if all your problems are gone. Changing it is simple if you are using ASIO4all, just click the top reight corner where it says the samples, then a window will pop up with your ASIO configuration, ins, outs, well there is a button there labled configuration, click that, you will be taken to the ASIO4all config window, grab the sample slider and double whatever it is on now. Click exit, then I think apply, you will be all set.

When I loaded the 2.0, my Firepod quit working

Then I had to reinstall the pod with disc, so far OK.

Slowrider can you check to see if the Firepod's MIDI is working in 2.0?

I had to use one last nite and couldnt get the midi going. It said "enabled" in reaper, but I didnt get any input.

It says sample 8 x 1024 latency 185ms.

What tab do I go under to find the configuration???

should look something like this :

Somewhere on your PC you should have an asio control panel for your card. Or go to options\preferences\audio\device and you should see an asio control panel there

I've been struggling with Reaper, and now I've given up and reverted back to logic. However I've lost all MIDI on my Firepods after I reset my PC and reistalled everything. I initially blamed the latest Firepod firmware - the updater just crashes all the time. But after reading this Thread I'm thinking perhaps Reaper had something to do with it!?!...as I installed Reaper around the same time.

I'm seriously pissed of that I have no MIDI as I need my BCF2000 back in action.

If you ran a firmware update recently and part of the interface stopped working, I would struggle to justify blaming Reaper for that.

Firmware updates are risky - I am in the middle of boxing up my Yamaha i88x for repairs after one failed on me, and I'm now without sound at home. In my case it's the other way around though - I can still use MIDI but the audio part of the mLAN thing isn't happening at all.

are you using an external hard drive? if not, your laptop hard drive is probably the culprit. it is most likely going at 5400 rpms when you need at least 7200 rpms to handle a decent track count. hope this helps.

I had this problem with my laptop aswell. But when I loaded it into my desktop (which is a decent computer) there were absolutely no problems. I don't think it would be Reaper, but my laptop didn't handle recording well... maybe yours doesn't either? Hope this helps in some way.

I am not using the laptop to record, I simply transfer tracks from my MR-8....

I don't know what else could be using the drivers. I'll have to check it out.

I'm going to try to record on my laptop soon...gathering up gear and any mistakes you make, I hope to learn from.

So far..

I have a new Toshiba with Vista. I got it in November 2007 so it's pretty current. AMD Turion 64 X2 1.9 GHz with 2GB ram.

I need to get a firewire interface, looking towards...

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...ace?sku=246031

I already have this mixing board..

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...0V-?sku=630132

I downloaded Reaper with ASIO for all drivers.

Been trying to learn reaper, the last multitracking I did was a few years ago with Cakewalk PA9 and Cool Edit Pro on my Windows98 machine....

I'll keep checking in for advice,

Dae

The biggest problem I've seen so far, besides this mess that I seem to have caused myself, is this:

Good luck with it, keep us posted how it goes!
