Flatwounds

I just set my band mate`s Prescission up with Flatwounds.

Hooked it up to a Asdown tube amp, and damn that sounds so great.

Cant wait to show it of.

Flatwounds rock on Basses.

any other users?

I've got flatwounds on my fretless. I love 'em but only for certain stuff.

I prefer the brightness and snap of roundwounds for most of the stuff I do.

I have GHS Brite Flats on my '51 Precision reissue, and Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats on my Classic '50s P and fretless Jazz. The TIs don't lose the high end like a lot of flats, but they don't have the noise of rounds.

I have another P that's waiting on a fretless neck from Warmoth, and I already have a set of TIs for it.

Put them on all my archtops as standard. Unless asked to setup for something else.

I've got flats on my fretless and my old Kay short scale....they sound more "bass" than "guitar" to my ears, and I like that on those basses...
I'm gonna replace the Kay's strings with a fresh set this weekend....I hate to do it, because I think that the flats on there probably date back to the 60s, but there's one lone roundwound G string, and I want the set of strings to sound like one family...
....and I'm thinking about flats for the Jetstar....whatever's on there now sounds a little jangly, and I'd like a darker sound...the jury's still out...
....got roundwounds on the Franken-P, though....I like that big, grand piano sound on that one...

Disclaimer: As amateurs go, I'm pretty rank....take anything I say with a big lick of salt...

Maybe this is a stupid question, but anyone know how flat-wounds sound on acoustic guitar (not bass)?

I have 1 bass set up with flats & another with round. I'd do both flat if I could come buy a set of flats at a reasonable price. Most places won't sell them in Oz & those that do only do so in bulk sets - bummer.
The sound is so incredibly different I couldn't think of a reason why I changed - & them I remembered the cost & availability thing.

From the sound clip you posted sometime ago regarding the sound you were looking for in an acoustic, I would suggest it's not a good idea for you.

You get a much mellower restrained sound with flatwound. Not much in the way of highs and the decay will be more immediate. There's no harm in trying them but you won't be impressed. I use them on archtops because you get that deep, mellow jazz tone. They work well on 335 style for BB King style blues as well.

Thumbs up

I pretty much only use flatwounds for my stuff.
